I am installing a new cpu and motherboard in. my processor a i7 8700k and a m370 motherboard. Taking out a i5 and m270 and being as my windows key was a OEM I've been told it won't function right since it's connected to the other motherboard. My OS is on my SSD which is where I want to put the new OS I got but I don't quite understand. Is it even possible to do it that way? Do I need to uninstall the current os first if so how? Or do I do it after I put in the other OS? Both OS are windows 10 I've tried looking online and I can't really find a straight answer.

EDIT: or am i just overthinking this just do a clean install?

Solution
ok so you need to create a usb windows 10 installer with either a disk or usb flash drive (min 4gb). search win 10 media creation tool and go to Microsoft website. download the win 10 installer to usb drive or disk. now when ready to boot up with new ssd have usb drive or disk plugged in. it should boot from usb but if it doesnt you will have to go to bios and change boot order.

once it boots from usb you will follow instructions. it will ask you what drive you want OS to be on, select SSD. you may have to format if it doesnt install immediately. once it copy's OS to SSD successfully you will pull usb drive before rebooting or it will try and repeat same steps . If you dont have windows key thats ok you can validate it later, I would suggest you get one beforehand. that one you'll have to figure out yourself, but some people pay way less than others. That should get you through it

now you mentioned you had a OEM PC and you are swapping motherboard and cpu. what OEM PC do you have?

Its not one actually made by a company. It's one I built myself and when i first made it I didn't really look into the difference between OEM and Retail which was my fault. and so I just need to do it how I Installed windows the first time? Cause I'm wanting to put it on the same SSD that the OEM one is on. Will it erase the OEM version because I want it gone. Or do I need to get a new SSD? Or should i have no even gone with retail either... I'm too new at this..

as you will be installing a fresh OS and starting clean, any info that's important you need backup beforehand to avoid losing it. yes do it the same way as last time i think. there will be a screen that will ask you what location you want the OS (C). you should erase and format at this point! you will see a few options below the location options something that looks like an eraser. Do this before you install a second OS onto your SSD

okay so at Step 6 I can see format, but I don't see erase.

should I go to admin command prompt and do list disk, select disk, etc etc or use since I have a Samsung one the Samsung Magician. cause I mean if i were to use the Magician right now (new parts aren't in yet) and it did the secure erase would it be able to even do it all since it has the OS on it?
I've never done this before so I have no Idea what I'm doing

What OS is this, and where did it come from?

It's Windows 10 and I can't honestly remember where I got it from... I know it wasn't a bootleg site though. All I wanna do is Remove the Current OEM OS on the SSD pretty much make the thing new for the New Install. I might just use samsung Magician for it but do I really need the Bootable usb drive for it? cause is that's the case I need to get a 2nd usb stick I guess one for that the other for the windows Install tool.

OK...you don't need to use the Samsung Magician. At all.

For the OS licensing...
Read and do this before you change any parts:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/20530/windows-10-reactivating-after-hardware-change
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-3164428/windows-build-1607-activation.html

This will (probably) allow you to transfer the license from your old system to the new. Assuming the original system is still operational.

Then, just do a clean install of the OS in the new system.
During this install, you'll delete all existing partitions, resulting in a blank drive.

Proceed on with the install.

I thought that wouldn't work since the current OS is OEM and connected to the current motherboard?

yeah this is what i found
It depends on how Windows 10 was originally configured on your computer.

If its a full retail store bought license online or offline, it is transferable to a new computer or motherboard.

Before Win 10 - 1607 Anniversary release, you'd be correct.

With Windows 10, the lines between OEM and Retail have become significantly blurred.
If the license will link to an MS account (steps above), it can almost certainly be transferred to different hardware.

It's worth a try.

If it works, great.
If it fails, you're in no worse situation than if you never tried it.

Okay... so it booted up and everything but when I go to activation it doesn't have the option for troubleshoot? Do I just do the clean install then?

Did you link the OS license to your MS account before changing the parts?
