Why do motherboards have onboard soundcards? i was looking for a decent headset and they are all USB anyway right? so the onboard sound card is just in case i would want a serious home theater speaker system hooked up to my pc? (because the cheaper speaker all are connected via usb too..)
Thank you in advance!

So you don't need to buy a sound card and it helps them sell the product. Not all headsets, and for sure not speakers, are USB. Many people just use headphones with their computers not gaming headsets. You don't need a home theater speaker connected to use the sound card, there are many good speakers that people use. Yes in some cases they would buy an add-on card but most of the time, the onboard is used. I have a $400 set of speakers running off my onboard audio.

i see, so even if i use the green 3.5mm output of the front shield it uses the onboard soundchip?
Thank you very much both of you, I found it quite hard to find anything more serious speakerwise (5.1 and higher) without an dedicated DAC
