Is the AMD FX-8350 Compatible with a Gigabyte GA-970a-DS3P ATX AM3+

I’m building my first computer, and have been warned that some 970 chipset mobo need a bios update prior to using Vishera CPUs, but I’ve also read that it’s barely usable until you can update your bios, so would I need to borrow someone’s CPU to update the BIOs or would I be better off picking a different MOBO?

First of all, don't build an AMD FX system. They cost more than a newer, faster CPU and have no upgrade path. You would most definitely be better off with an AM4 Ryzen system.

Is there any reason you chose to build an FX system that you can't decide to change it?
