i7-4770 vs i5-7500

I am deciding between these two CPUs ... I am mainly doing web browsing(like opening 20 chrome instances) and opening multiple IDEs so no gaming .... which CPU fairs better ?

Also, would you recommend 8th/7th gen Intel U laptops vs a desktop with one of the above mentioned CPUs ? Which setup is proper for a programmer ?

Just get the one with the 4770. It's the better cpu. It's a little older but Intel hasn't progressed much from generation to generation.

The i5-8400 would be much better than either of those options due to being hex-core.

As far as laptop are concerned, not sure there is anything equivalent. For the most part, Intel's low-power parts are equivalent to stepping one to two tiers down from the desktop counterparts - most mobile i7 have specs on par with desktop i3 or i5, mobile i5 are usually equivalent or worse than desktop i3, etc.

Um, first that isn't an answer to his question, and second to get an 8th gen you need 1. the chip 2. DDR4 memory which isn't that cheap 3. a brand new motherboard. My answer would be the I7 4770 because it has more cache and a higher clock speed, as well has hyperthreading which will make that CPU faster in multithreaded applications like video editing or something, however it really depends on the workload, like do you need high speed memory that DDR4 is capable of or newer technologies that the 4th gen doesn't have than 7th gen does. or Gaming, the i5 might be faster for gaming since it is based on a newer architecture, but the I7 has a higher clock speed at up to 3.9 ghz.

The Core i7 4770 is better but either will work well. So get the cheapest one. If both are the same price or close to it get the top performer which is the 4770. The Core i7 7700 is only marginally better than the 4770. So getting the 7500 for the upgradeability makes little sense.

He's going to need all of the above for the i5-7500 too and the i5-8400 is $20 cheaper on newegg.com.

So buying an i5-7500 instead of the cheaper yet far superior i5-8400 (about on par with the i7-7700) would be a mistake.

Except you need a much more expensive board for 8th gen CPU's since most 7th gen boards can't run 8th gen CPU's.

H370 motherboards are available for as little as $90 for mATX or $100 for standard size. That's only ~$5 more than h270 motherboards.

Yes, but as we discussed above the I7 4770 isn't very much slower than even a 7th gen I7, I find it hard to justify the cost for new parts vs used ones that perform almost as good for much less, I would rather pay half the money for a used I7 4770, DDR3 memory, and a used board for it than a new CPU new memory and a new motherboard for only a couple percent more performance.

I'd keep the i7 4770k, Completely ignore the i5 7500, and the i5 8400 as those would result in a downgrade instead of an upgrade. Ignore the i7 7700k as the performance gain is not substantial enough to spend the money on. It's not time for you to upgrade yet. I'ts as simple as that.

Well, it depends. We can only really give an estimate as to which is faster since we don't know the OP's workload, it may be GPU intensive or CPU intensive and we don't know, gaming might see better performance on a newer I5 since the architecture is, supposed to be, better than the older versions. As for multithreaded applications like video or photo editing or game streaming/ recording using H.264 would see a benefit from the more performance of the 4770, that's ignoring the 6 cores on the 8th gen chips.

Lets also keep in mind, that although it is considered safe to purchase a CPU/GPU/RAM used. It aint all that safe to purchase a Motherboard used. As many people sell their motherboards with things slightly broken in them, and considering how important a motherboard is for its components. Its a huge risk buying one used. Even brand new ones sometimes come with defects and DOA.


If you're buying all this stuff used, then its best to just go with something new. Also, It makes no sense to buy an I7 4770k used with then i7 4790k exists. Anyone buying a 4770k used, is likely to get a bad chip in the mail from the buyer.

Take my advice and don't buy a 4770k used. Especially when the 4790k exists. You're likely to run into a bad chip.

The i5-8400 is faster than the i7-7700k at stock clocks in quite a few cases, which would put it a fair bit ahead of the i7-4770. The hex-core i5/i7-8xxx are the first major performance uplift in the Intel mainstream world in 5+ years.

Yes, that is true, but factor in the cost of DDR4 and a new motherboard and CPU vs the cost of a used I7 4770 DDR3 and a used motherboard and the OP then has to decide whether it is worth the extra money for the performance.
