Computer shut down while gaming and won't boot - burning electrical smell

Hi everyone!

I recently ran into a problem with my computer last week. I was gaming (Fornite) on my PC and all of a sudden it shut down. The screen went black and it completely shut off. Immediately, I smelled what seemed like something electric burning. I quickly checked to see if there was a fire and left the room for it to air out.

30 minutes later I came back to find it wouldn't turn on and no lights were on. When I pressed the power button nothing happened, but when I switched the PSU on/off switch off then back on, the front LED lights and fans started, but no other fan or components did. The top "on" button was also unresponsive and I was only able to turn off the computer by switching off the power supply. The monitor did not turn on and the computer wouldn't boot.

I did some searching online and tried various troubleshooting methods including:

  • 1) Switch out RAM sticks and try different slots
    2) Unplug Graphics Card
    3) Unplug and re-plug in PSU into motherboard
    4) Switch monitor HDMI input into motherboard integrated graphics
    5) Switched out all hard drives and tried them individually
and none of these seemed to work.

Eventually I decided to switch my power supply with a spare one we had and my component fans started to work! Everything seemed fine until I saw the RED led debug light on the CPU part of my motherboard. The computer wouldn't boot and now it seemed like an issue with my processor.

I'm worried perhaps there was a short circuit in my power supply and it busted my processor? I have read that it's more common for the mother board to be broken but the debug light seemed to work so I'm not sure.

Really at a loss for what to do next! My dad suggested I go to Microcenter and have them diagnose for 99$ but I'm trying to avoid spending more money than I need to.

Does anyone have any advice? Should I get a new power supply and processor? I apologize if I use incorrect terminology btw, I'm not the best with computers so I'm coming to you guys.

Specs:

  • 1) MOBO: MSI Z170A Plus
    2) PSU: EVGA NEX750B
    3) RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 8GB RAM (2)
    4) Processor: I think Intel i7770k? (Honestly not sure)
    5) Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO
    6) GPU: Gigabyte WindForce GTX 770

It didn't smell burnt last time but I can check again! I believe it has enough wattage but I should check just to be safe.

I just checked and it does seem to smell burnt. The spare PSU is 550W and using an online calculator that seems to be enough.

WHICH 550W psu? Any random one can be poor quality and give way below 550W.

EVGA Supernova 550G2. I don't believe it's poor quality though.

Yup, it is very good quality.

Strange. Okay, do you have a friend who might have a motherboard of the same chipset you can try your system with? I would say your motherboard is fried and so is your processor because from my experience once the PSU goes, it usually takes a few components with it.

Okay! I will try that! Hoping it's not the processor but we will see! Thank you for all the help!
