Unstable computer, what do :(

My computer freezes/hangs on me regularly - ranges from 3 mins after boot to sometimes lasting 6+ hours without an issue (average probably about an hour before freezing). It was stable several years, but became unstable about a year ago and I haven't done anything about it until now. The typical behavior is the computer becoming completely unresponsive and often times gets stuck repeating whatever sound was playing when it got stuck. Sometimes instead of freezing it will just reboot or BSOD. One other oddity that may or may not be related is that I have some odd "ghost" images on my monitors sometimes. It's basically like what used to happen to old CRT monitors (mostly transparent image of something that used to be on the screen), except that it goes away after a full shutdown (not a simple reboot), and happens primarily on the edge(s) of the screens (can affect all three of my monitors). I really only care about the crashing issue, just mentioning the weird ghost images in case it's related. Some of my testing/notes:

  • ■ Do not believe this is related to my video card - disconnected it entirely and ran off the on-board graphics - still ran into frequent crashes (Oddly still seeing the weird ghost images without the discrete graphic card connected..)
    ■ Do not believe this is temperature related, have had HWMonitor running when it froze (many times), temperatures have always been very reasonable (Typically CPU/GPU temps typically less than 50C (60C if stress testing), never seen any other temperature above 35C)
    ■ Do not believe this is driver related, have had computer freeze while browsing the BIOS on more than one occasion
    ■ Ran MemTest86 several times - never reported any issues
    ■ Cannot correlate the crashes with anything, seems to crash at more or less the same frequency whether I'm browsing the web, gaming, or stress testing
    ■ Have not been able to catch any PSU issues (yet), monitored one of the 12V and one of the 5V rails with a scope (setting trigger just under the expected voltage), did not trigger when the computer froze - so PSU seems to be doing its job
Specs:

  • Built Sept 2013
Intel Core i7-4770k - Was overclocked to 4.7 GHz for a while (maybe that was a bad idea?), now down to 4 GHz
    ASRock Z87 PRO4 Motherboard
    Sapphire Radeon HD 7950
Mushkin Enhanced Blackline 16 GB (2x8GB)
    Rosewill FORTRESS-750 750W Continuous
Custom water cooling loop (CPU + GPU)
    Windows 10 (64 bit)
My main goal for this post is to determine what the most likely culprit is. I think I'm at the point where I just need to start swapping out parts, but I don't have any spares sitting around so this could get pretty expensive pretty quick. I'm hoping someone might have seen similar issues before and can point me in the right direction.

Thanks!

Hello there.
First of all you need to get a baseline on your computer without overcloking it. Do the usual steps, last update on the system`s BIOS motherboard, default settings and check again the stability.
Try to check the system error logs as well.
Good luck.
