Windows won't recognize my product key upon new hard drive install

Hi. I decided to start fresh and install a new main hard drive. My older hard drive was slow and so I thought it was time to start over. Only when I installed the new hard drive and inserted my windows installation disk(the same I used for my older drive) , my product key wouldn't be recognized. Does it have something to do with my older drive? Do I need to uninstall windows from the other drive before installing it on this new one? Sounds rather silly but I don't know why my key wouldn't be recognized...

What specific error message does it give you?
Where did this 8.1 license come from?
You're using the license key, not the "Product ID", correct?

The message was : "we couldn't verify the product key, please check your installation media" the license key came with the dvd I ordered. I did enter the license key, in the XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX format

DVD ordered from where?
You'll probably have to call MS to get this working.

Guess I'll have to. It's the same product key from my older drive... Why wouldn't it work now
