ive never used a forum

so im ignorant... a forum is like a chat discussion thing right? do i get notifications to responses or do i keep checking back?

Yes you are correct. Yes you will get notified of responses.

Forum is generally about a topic of interest, whether it be news or questions or general gossip. This forum is generally about technical help with pc's or other electronics and associated stuff such as audio and windows.

You won't get notifications unless you are a) author of a topic (opening person or Op) or have posted in a topic. Even then you'll need to setup how you receive notifications in your profile. How and when you check back is up to you, but if you ask a question, checking that post frequently is advised as quite often to receive help, others will ask you specific details.
