I recently built a computer that can support light 720p gaming on low settings.
My specs are
Pentium G4560 With Hyperthreading
GeForce GT 730 2GB by MSI
4GB of DDR4 RAM

I am wondering what the best upgrade would be to increase my gaming performance.
Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

G4560 is a very capable chip for the price.
Almost certainly a graphics card upgrade will benefit you for most games, particularly fast action games.
Is your GT730 the 128 bit version?
If so, it is some three tiers slower than the 64 bit version.

If you upgrade graphics, GT1030 would be the minimum to get a good performance increase, GTX750ti or GTX1050 would be better.

Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration.
If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited.

4gb may be a problem for some games. But most older games were developed to use on 2/3gb.

So, your first upgrade should be your GPU. The 730 is holding you back, a GT 1030 would be an awesome upgrade for you. You need more RAM as well 4 GB is a little too little. I'd add another 4 GB.

Over all, most of your system is pretty weak for even 720p gaming. If I were you I'd just look at an upgrade to a Ryzen 3 2200G. The integrated video would be FAR superior to the GT 730, the CPU portion would be a healthy upgrade, but that would mean a new motherboard and probably new RAM as well. If your budget is tight, go with the GT 1030 option, but if you CAN spare $250-ish (low end motherboard, 8gb 2666 RAM, 2200g) the 2200G would be a good way to go.

The CPU is actually pretty decent, even at 1080P. The thing that needs to be updated is RAM to 8gb and GPU to a GTX 1050 or 1050 ti. Once done it will perform quite well on 720P/High settings or 1080P/Medium settings.

If you are not multitasking, 4gb may not be a big problem.
Check the task manager for the hard fault page rate.
If it is anything like 1 per second, you will benefit from more ram.

Be careful about simply adding ram.
Ram must be matched.
Better to replace the 4gb with a 2 x 4gb kit.

Would it run fortnite?

Yes. The GTX 750Ti is one of the more popular cards for people looking to run Fortnite.
