Partial Re-build RAM Recommendations?

I'm looking at a partial rebuild.

i5 8600K is the CPU I'm 99% sure I'm going to get.
I looked at the Tom's Hardware reviews and I'm deciding between the MSI Z370 Tomahawk and the Asus Prime Z370-A motherboard. From what I can tell if I don't intend to SLI video cards then the MSI is worth the savings.

I'll be pairing it with an ASUS STRiX 8GB 1080 video card, a Corsair 750W Gold certified modular power supply and an as of yet to be determined ~250gb SSD.

I run the Oculus rift and approximately 6-8 USB connections and a secondary on board sound card. I'm inclined to go with 16gb of RAM and price is as important to me as performance. As you can see from my motherboard and CPU choices I'm willing to invest in performance, but not top dollar. What RAM does anyone recommend for my rebuild (with SSD recommendations welcome as well).

Anything I've overlooked? I'll likely drop another Coolermaster 212 EVO CPU cooler in. I will not be using liquid cooling. The room my CPU is in is never above 68 F and I've got 3 case fans that make it very easy to put a conservative overclock on my CPU.

The Coolermaster 212 EVO is ancient, there are so many better and quieter options out there. Look at the Cryorig H7 Looks cooler, quieter, works better, etc.

For Ram its hard to go wrong with any brand these days, especially if you're not doing a heavy overclock. I am partial to Corsair Vengeance LPX. Ram speed has less of an effect on Intel, but DDR4-3000 is a good price/performance compromise.

SSD you can never go wrong with a Samsung. Either of those boards offers an M.2 slot so look into the Samsung 960 EVO M.2 drive for your boot drive. Its economical, reliable, and super fast.

I got myself G.SKILL Ripjaws V Blazing Red DDR4 3000MHz 16GB for a similar build. Cost me less then $200. Great memory.

As for SSD you can't go wrong with Samsung. Price you are willing to pay defines the speed you get. I still have my 500MB/s Corsair SSD which is great for everyday use and gaming.

The MSI Tomahawk is not a bad motherboard. If you are looking for a conservative overclock, then it will do just fine. But if you are wanting to push the 8600k as fast as you can, then you may want a better board. I think the Asrock Extreme4 is one of the best value for z370 motherboards. But in the end, you wont see a difference between the Extreme4 or the Tomahawk.

As said above, RAM brands don't matter much. Intel has good RAM compatibility. I would say at least go for RAM with 2666 speed. There is really no need to go for speeds higher than 3000mhz as speed and performance does not scale much past 3000mhz on Intel systems.

The Samsung 850 Evo is the most popular SSD in the world and priced competitively. I would go for it.

I agree with above, the 212 is not a great CPU cooler. I like the Cryorig H7. The Cryorig H5 is a little beefier than the H7 so if you want to push the clock speeds, then you may want to go with the H5. But if overclocking is not important, then see how the 212 runs for you.

Lastly, you don't need a 750 watt PSU for that system. In fact, a 550 watt PSU would be enough.

I remember when RAM used to be ~an $80 part for a build like this. Those were the days. My $600 target is being killed by the cost of RAM. I'm at $685 and that's with an 860 EVO for $35 less than a 960. I don't see any 16GB sets anywhere near what I was hoping for. Time to adjust my budget I guess.

Yeah ram is still very expensive, prices have gotten lower but I'd imagine another year before it really drops.
