my external hard drive is being detected by the pc (its giving me the prompt to safely remove hard drive and it appears in the device manager) but it doesn't give me the option to access the files inside, and when i checked in the properties in device manager, i looked in volumes and all i saw were dashes, there was no disk information there. please advise.

Last time I had this issue, replugging it to another port worked. Although this was with a USB stick, so it might not be the same case here, just hoping it is. In case that doesn't help, try what seagate_surfer recommended
