i7 8700k reaching 100C temps when trying to benchmark

I have a new build with the following

17 8700k
asus rog strix z370-E
deepcool captain 120 liquid cooler

I installed ROG Realbench to see how things are running. I know very little so was using the overclocking guide at ROG to get started. Right from the start the cpu temp went up to 100 degrees C so I stopped the test.

From what I understand this is way too hot, no? When I installed the cooler I did not use paste because it came out of the package with paste pre-installed on the copper plate. Should I buy some better paste and reapply?

Any other thoughts? I will try to figure out how to post a screen shot of the HWMonitor specs. One other weird thing, The clocks report in HWMonitor show that they maxed out at 5ghz. I did not think that I set any overclocking in the bios yet, but I am an extreme newb so maybe I accidentally set something. Should I reload the defualt bios settings?

Other thoughts?

My intent is to just get running around 4.7ghz. I was hoping to just set and forget once I get it going but I want to make sure I am not damaging anything. Hopefully the deepcool 120 unit will get me there.

Thanks guys!

77c is fine. Heck I'd run an Intel chip up around 85 before really worrying (cue the people who swear up and down thats way too hot, its not -...
If you're planning on achieving an aggressive overclock (or even a moderate one on that CPU), you may need a bigger AIO cooler as that 120 unit doesn't appear to be sufficient for sustained operation as desired without putting yourself at risk of damaging your chip.

120 CLC is no better than a good air cooler, in fact its often a little worse. You should make sure that the cooler cools the processor at totally stock settings before trying to overclock. I would imagine you won't get much. If its possible to return that cooler and get at least a 240 CLC or something like a Noctua NH-D14, then you can overclock.

Okay thanks for the thoughts.

I went back into bios and chose "load optimized defaults"
Went back to try the benchmark and the temps are maxing at 77C and it looks like the speed is at 4.6GHZ. If that is what happening I am fine with that. I am not 100% sure I am interpreting correctly though. Shouldn't the speed by 3.7ghz using defaults?

All thermal compounds take a while to cure properly, so if you run the PC for a few days you should see a drop in temps; possibly gradually, or possibly quite quickly, as the compound reaches maximum effectiveness.

I would be worried about those temperatures, is the pump running at 100% rpm?? It is often best to do so, then regulate the radiator fan speeds to achieve the level of noise/cooling you are happy with.
Often the fans are the weakest part of an AIO set up; I replaced mine early on; currently running Gentle Typhoon 2250rpm fans that are much quieter and much more effective than anything else I have tried.

Is 77C peak too high? I'm am really just using this as a work station but I do use some 3D rendering software. The reason I'm wanting higher clock speeds is autocad is all about single thread performance from what I've read and I just want to get a good solid tune number that I can use. If the deep cool is the problem maybe I'll ditch it and get something else if I can get a reliable 15% or so speed increase. Anyway, obviously I don't know what I'm doing so post up some more comments if you have any thoughts..

Thx, B

Okay I just checked and i can return the deepcool so considering another solution. The problem is I don't think I can run a 240 double fan. The asus mother board is really bulky and the shields and ram are in the way of most of the top fan mounts. Another idea, what about using a second fan with a 120 liquid cool system kinda like a push pull air cooler?

Now if you want to overclock, which IMO you seem to have the headroom to do it, you need to follow proper overclocking procedures, getting 4.7 is not unreasonable.

As I said, cooler is not the best but a mild overclock should be ok.

An extra fan on it is not enough. You maybe can get a mild overclock out of it.

What case do you have? Maybe shoot us a picture too of how it looks inside all set up

An 8700K will turbo a single core up to 4.7 GHz.....temps permitting....; if your temps are in the upper-70's , I'd stay with your current settings, and forego the enticing siren's song of the mythical heat-free 5 GHz barrier at 68C :)
