Is Upgrade needed?

I have a budget build PC from 3-4 years ago and it's beginning to become slow. I upgraded to a new graphics card and it got relatively faster. I felt as if it should have been a lot faster though. Reading some articles, I was told that the graphics card could only handle what my CPU would allow. So I am thinking of upgrading my AMD Athlon X4 760K to a Intel Core i5-8400. I would like my games to run at decent graphics with a 60+ framerate. I am also going into graphic design so I am hoping the upgrade can help programs run faster too. It is a $170 upgrade and I'm a college student so that's a decent chunk of money. I can refund it but the computer store is 40 mins away and I would really appreciate not driving there and back 40 minutes because I had no idea what I was doing. Thanks for the help!

Since you have DDR3 ram you can upgrade to i5-4000 series (known as haswell) and some cheap motherboard (around 150-200$) if you want cheap upgrade path, or save up more money and get real upgrade like i5-8400, motherboard and 8GB of DDR4 but thats around 300-400$ upgrade.

First off, appreciate the reply. Are you telling me that my current motherboard (MSI A78M-E35) won't support the Intel Core i5-8400?

Building PCs are a thing I can do. I literally have no idea with parts. I appreciate the response.

Yea probably. Don't really want to buy a whole new motherboard and CPU for a couple of more frames per second. I do have a second graphics card that I could run if I were to have another motherboard but I don't even know where to start with choosing one.
