Hi all.

I have some micro SD cards and an external hard drive that I would like to password protect and/or encrypt, but I have no idea how to go about this.

I would like it so that these drives were password protected and/or encrypted so that no matter where they may be used (e.g. in smartphones, on different operating systems, with different computers) a password is required so that I will be the only one who will be able to have access to the drives.

With that said, how do you password protect and/or encrypt micro SD cards and external hard drives in such a way that they are protected (with respect to privacy) no matter where they are read (e.g. on different smartphones, computers, operating systems)?

Thank you.

Solution
you have no hardware encryption so you need to create encrypted FS.
you will need to format this device so backup all data to other device.
then follow tutorial of your choice:
https://answers.syr.edu/display/software/Encrypting+your+external+hard+drive+on+Windows+and+OSX

I think you will not be able to read encrypted data from smartphone, at least not with windows native encryption. If you want to go OS-independent then there will be a lot more fun.

to make it anything LESS problematic you will need to buy HARDWARE encrypted storage of your choice:
example: Pendrive Integral Encrypted 32GB
or here a fingerprint-encrypted USB
