help with getting files off hard drive that has windows on it

i purchased a new hard drive, and new motherboard... my old 500gb drive still has windows installed and personal files, how do i go about removing windows, but not losing my pictures and documents? and just make this a file drive?... Im scared to format the drive and lose all images

You build the new system, get the OS installed.
Then...you connect the old drive (power off, of course).
Boot up, and that old drive should just appear as a secondary drive, with its own drive letter. D or E perhaps.

Accessing the pics etc inside may involve permissions issues. Take Ownership is what you need to look for.
