Hello,

I just got my first android phones, Amazon Echo and Fire TV both with Alexa. And some smart home outlets to turn lights on and off. I'm moving all my files to cloud storage, and want to set up new backups and sync all devices to USB drive plugged into a Asus RT-N56U wireless router. I also want to be able to stream music, pictures, and 4k video from USB HDD to the Fire TV using Windows Media Player on Windows 10 and Kodi / VNC App on Fire TV.

I also have a Cisco DPC3939 wireless gateway from my ISP that is the only thing connected right now and everything uses for WiFi except Fire TV. It is plugged into Ethernet port on Cisco gateway.

I also have 2 extra Android phones. 1 has an active number that i want to use as a backup home phone / hotspot. I will forward calls from this phone to my cell phone.

The second phone is unregistered and has no service. It is used for WiFi only to stream music to bluetooth speaker right now. Maybe it can be used as an alternate VPN or remote for Alexa smart home and Fire TV / Kodi apps ?

I was thinking of getting Nord VPN or Perfect Privacy to run computers and phones through. Especially the Fire TV with Kodi installed, and laptop for secured banking. Perfect Privacy has Dynamic NeuroRouting which is suppose to be the best, but Nord is way cheaper for the 3 year plan.

Right now everything is using the Cisco DPC3939 gateway for Internet.

Laptops and phones are wireless, Fire TV is wired.

Windows Media Player is set up to stream media from laptops to fire TV.

VNC on Fire TV could also access picture and video files on laptops and play them.

Laptops and phones are setup to backup and sync files to cloud storage. I want to change this to have all devices backup to the USB HDD on the Asus RT-N56U router. Then have those backups upload to the cloud as secondary offsite storage.

Alexa is registered but not setup, and the smart outlets are still in the box. Didn't want to set them up until I knew what network they were going to be on, and which device was going to be the remote control.

I have a long computer background, so tech usually comes easy, but this is new to me, and any advice on what direction to take will be hreatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Cliff

Solution
Extremely hard to know exactly what you are really asking.

From what I can tell you want to use your router as a NAS and have it back itself up to the cloud. I am not sure what feature the router has, I tend to not run factory firmware on my asus devices so I forget what features they have. Running other firmware may be a option for you also but you need to check compatibility lists.

In any case the router can do what ever the router has software to do. I have seen some of these device with ability to sync to some cloud providers.

A router is not really designed to do this it is a secondary feature they toss on to make the list if features longer. It works to a point but the device is not optimized for that purpose. Real NAS...

The tricky part is finding software that all those devices support.
One that's not on here that you may use already is Plex.
You need the membership $120 and it's multi user setup isn't the greatest in my opinion.
I like the plex one a lot. I use it to store my phones pictures/videos. google provides a free app/contact backup.

I recommend having a box that can run all the services you want and also a NAS to back it up.
One backup even if it's a raid mirror isn't good enough in my opinion.
The NAS can be a very low spec one.
I use proxmox for my services. You can install any VM you want and use turnkey containers. which are easy to use.
