I had recently posted a thread here : http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3702827/cpu-battery-burnt.html

I tried replacing the PSU cable. Unfortunately, soon after, I received the blue screen of death. The PC restarted before I could see the error message.

After a few tries, Neither the startup repair nor booting the computer (even safe mode) worked. That one was my work PC and I don't even have my setup disk.

I couldn't even think of losing all important files. Now the repair options cant even detect the OS. CHKDSK has done what it could. Still, no use.

I don't even have a restore point. Help please.

Edit: I somehow managed to open 'My Computer' . C drive is NTFS, but corrupted. Other partitions are healthy.

I have had, ages ago, a similiar problem with one laptop. The system smetimes booted ok, sometimes it hangs up while using programs, or sometimes it did not pass post screen. Tired of that I created a LinuxMint live CD, and the system booted fine with it, I did a copy of all the valuable data, and then I do a fresh install of WindowsXP.
Actually, I did some undesired programs remove aided by this CD.
I hope this could help you.
