Solution
If your games are on Steam or any other account based site like Origin, Google Play, Microsoft, etc, they will be activated when you login and have your account confirmed on your new system.

Many option for online gaming, to answer your question, Yes you buy a game and install it, then when you run the game it connects to an online server then you play. Most games have additional "add ons" which can be purchased separately but the basic game is free while playing online, or course you need an internet connection to do so.

Gaming experience is dependent on your internet connection; some games use very little, but some are hogs that need a fast ADSL line.

Lord Of the Rings Online (LOTRO), uses a few KBytes per second, so in theory you could run it on an old dial up line; however, with a ~60GB file download for the Hi-Rex gfx option, it would take you until judgement day to download it on that line.

A low and stable ping is better than a fast, laggy connection; cheap ISPs tend to have very poor pings; you get what you pay for.

If it´s a 2nd hand game you´ll probably won´t be able to access it´s online features, because for the online games there´s usually a CD key which can only be activated one time so take that on mind before buying used games..

It really depends what type of game you want to play; there are a few out there (like LOTRO) where you can play for free - with restrictions on what you can do in game.

Others have "Free Weekend" offers, so you can set up an account and play for free over a couple of days.

They are a good way to test the water and see what you like.

One big source for online games is Steam, many people swear by it.
