Hello guys, i have following system:

Ryzen 7 1700x
GTX 1060 6GB
16GB RAM @2933 Mhz
Gigabyte GA-AX370-Gaming K5
400GB SATA SSD
512 GB M2 SATA SSD
2 TB 7200 rpm HDD SEAGATE BARRACUDA
650w EVGA PE supernova PSU

Hello guys, the 2 TB 7200 rpm HDD SEAGATE BARRACUDA is the subject matter here... i use this drive as both a backup for media and to install videogames. I got this HDD about 2 years ago. And recently i noticed it is having problems playing some video files that used to play without issues, i know the issue is the HDD becouse my pc can play 4k footage stored in the SSDs without issue, also just 2 weeks ago it used to play these same video files from the HDD just fine. So i am having HDD issues, i run CHKDSK and it says everything is fine... Could these issues be caused from some corrupted files or something else that could be fixed with a simple formatting of the HDD? or should i buy a new HDD before this one dies and i loose all my data???

Solution
Hello Jorge_acosta, the best way to test the Seagate drive it with the software Seatools because we don't publish drive attributes and thresholds as a matter of policy, 3rd party utility results need to be taken with a grain of salt. Here is more info on Seatools.

The videos start playing, and at some point or when trying to play from a later point in the video the video just freezes... Also i've found that when opening certain folders in the hard drive the thumbnail previews of the video files take quite a while longer to show up compared to other folders in the same HDD

I've tried with Windows media player, VLC Media Player , Media Player Classic Home Cinema all having the same issue

My drive failed a "Short Drive Self TEST" with Seatools... The software says:

"Now is a good time to make sure you have a current backup of your important data.

Unfortunately, your Seagate product has failed an important diagnostic test, possibly caused by problem sectors which are difficult to read. Seagate recommends that you run SeaTools for DOS, which has the ability to repair most problem sectors. SeaTools for DOS may be able to save you from the inconvenience and down time of exchanging the drive. For more information on this subject see our online FAQ"

So i am starting to backup my data, hopefully my HDD can be repaired by the Seatool software.

I will let you know how it goes

Jorge_acosta, best of luck. In case you need it, here is the link to Segate support.

Also, having a good back up plan is essential.

The conventional wisdom by tech experts on backups is known as the 3-2-1 method. Basically you want:

3 copies of any data you don't want to lose
2 different mediums it's stored on (so 2 different drives in your computer, for example)
1 copy kept offsite, to prevent against disaster.

Keep us posted.

Thank you, it's great that Seagate has people roaming these forums! More companies should do that!
