I bought a backup hard drive off of ebay for my Gateway 4SX33 with Windows 3.1 and wanted to make sure it worked (WD Caviar 2340)
I replaced my working hard drive with the "new" one and got 3 long beeps. Then I put the original hard drive back in and got the same 3 long beeps. Then I realized that I had forgotten to attach power to the floppy drive. I didn't get the beeps any more and it sounded like a normal start up but I got a black screen. I put the "new" hard drive in again and got the same results so I reinstalled the original hard drive. I still get a black screen. I attached the monitor to a different computer and it works fine.
I unplugged and re-plugged in all of the cables to make sure there was a good connection on everything. The battery is new.

Any idea of what I did wrong and what to do to fix the problem?

Thanks a lot.

I'm thinking that the original drive is no longer set as boot priority one in the BIOS.

Go into the BIOS with the original drive in the system. You should see the original drive in the BIOS. Now look for something called "boot order" or something like that. You want that drive to be first.

Thanks for the response. The screen is black. I can't see anything.
