Researching motherboards for a NAS storage server and realized I don't know how to pick the correct CPU for the motherboard. For example, I was looking at the SuperMicro MBD-X11SAE-O motherboard and the spec sheet said: CPU Socket Type: LGA 1151 with CPU Type: Intel Xeon processor E3-1200 v5, Intel 6th Gen Core i7 / i5 / i3 series processors.

My problem came when I went searching for Intel Xeon E3-1200 CPU and could only find E3-1220, 1230, 1240, etc. CPUs.

Question: Can an Intel Xeon E3-1270 LGA 1151 Socket CPU fit in a Xeon E3-1200 LGA 1151 Socket motherboard and work properly?

Thanks for any advice as this is my first build and have lots to learn!

Thanks, XxDarkMarioxX for that reassurance! I kinda thought that was the case, but wanted to double check before purchasing a higher E3 CPU and it failing to work.

What motherboard you planning on buying and know its an Xeon E3-1200 LGA 1151 Socket motherboard but there lots off makes!

Went onto my computer online shop and most off them says

Single socket H4 (LGA 1151) supports Intel® Xeon® processor E3-1200 v5, Intel® 6th Gen. Core™ i7/i5/i3 series

Either:
SUPERMICRO MBD-X11SAE-O ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1151 Intel C236
-or-
SUPERMICRO MBD-X10SL7-F-O Micro ATX Server Motherboard LGA 1150 Intel C222 DDR3 1600

Can you explain a little bit more about off makes? I was looking at getting either SkyLake or Kaby for the CPU.

At this moment I'm just researching as this project looks like it will be an expensive one. I have a Fractal 804 Node case already that fits MATX/ITX mobos. My idea is to have a NAS server with 6 HDD and 2 SDDs. The NAS will be used for backups, user storage space and plex media files. Researching for a 64 GB ECC server, the X10 and X11's mother boards had good reviews for being a NAS server.
