Hello my friends
so my desktop is optiplex 980,
i wanted to add another internal sata 3.5 HDD (1 or 2TB) for storage to my 250GB
but today i opend the desktop case and found that the hard drive i have is actually sata 300 series
there's only a few space above the hdd for a same sized one
so long story short i don't know if i can upgrade to (1-2 tb) anymore
please answer this 3 very simple questions cause i have so many thoughts
1- first is there a sata 3.0 internal HDDs with (1TB and 2TB) on the market? (new ones)
2- can i remove this hard drive and put a sata 3.5 will it fit ?
3- will an ssd work as fast in this mother board if i install windows on it? my HDD is 3Gb/s though
i'd really appreciate the help and thanks in advance.

Solution
- Your PC model is Optiplex 980 DT = DeskTop it's drive caddy located underneath DVD drive, it seems to supports 1x 3.5 hard drive or 2x2.5 hard drives
The external 3.5 drive bay supports a media reader placement or another 3.5 Hard drive.[/b]
- The thicker tower is called optiplex 980 MT = Mini Tower supports 2x 3.5 dektop calss hard drive in a dedicated drive bay at the bottom of the MiniTower.

- the smallest one is the optiplex 980 SFF = Small Form Factor: Hard drive box + caddy is located at the center of the tower on top of the motherboard and appears supporting either 2x 2.5 drives or 1x 3.5

_SATA 300 is another qualifier for SATA speed link = 3Gb/s transfer speed, port is the same on motherboard and drive for all types of SATA implementations.

_ Drive Form Factor: Desktop HArd Drive : 3.5 inch drive measure approximately 4 inches wide, 5.8 inches long and 0.8 inches thick,
A laptop-grade 2.5 inch drive measures 2.8 inches wide, 4.0 inches long and 0.4 inches thick (SSD have approximately same measurements as 2.5 laptop drive)

- Fitting the hard drive in your case depends on the room available to mount it: is your desktop Small Form Factor model or regular optiplex 980 ?

_Full Blown Optiplex 980 desktop supports 2x 3.5" desktop sized hard drives ( but you could Fit a 2.5" SSD if needed via adapter )
_SFF 980 optiplex supports 1x 2.5" drive either hard drive or SSD, but it looks like it could support a 1x 3.5" hard drive instead of the 2.5" installed originally with an adapter bracket.

All OptiPlex 980 support 2x 3.5 drives.
2.5" and 3.5" are drive form factors. 3.0 is not a form factor but sata protocol version.

So I have no idea, what you mean by sata 300 series. Perhaps Intel SSD 330, 335 ?

1. All new sata HDDs are sata 3.0 version.
2. Yes. Your pc should be able to accommodate 2x 3.5" drives.
3. SSD is significantly faster than any HDD.

In addition to ROGG's advice, have you checked to see if there is a free SATA port on the motherboard? DELL really pare these boards down to the minimum. (My DELL USFF had space for an ODD and 2 SSD's, but only 2 SATA ports!!)

If there are spare ports, you may find they need to be enabled in the BIOS; someone else had issues with a similar Optiplex a few days ago.

you've said that some optiplex 980 support only 1 x2.5 see this picture, mine is the one in the middle
does it support 2x 3.5 or not?

also about me saying the word sata 3.0, honestly i have never hold a sata 3.5 with my hand i have a laptop and i know that the sata 3.5 is bigger sized that the 2.5
i know this only by looking at the pictures
so after i opened the case and took a look at the hdd it seemed to me that it's not that big
so i thouht that this is a medium sized hdd that i haven't heard of
this is a picture of my hdd is it a sata 3.5

you just answer those two questions the one about my optiplex picture does it support 2 x 3.5 ?
and the one about my sata picture is it 3.5 ?
regards to all of you.

Drive pictured is HDS721025CLA382 HGST Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.C 250GB 7200RPM SATA 3Gbps 8MB Cache 3.5-inch Internal Hard Drive
So you' ll definitely be able to upgrade to a larger 3.5 drive of a larger capacity, you can also go for a 2.5 SSD using a drive adapter with significant speed transfer boost although will be capped by your motherboard sata 300 Mb/sec bandwidth.
