Hello, I've sadly been stuck with an alienware x51 gen 1 as a gift w a crappy 1080p asus monitor and a gtx 1050ti i put in it a while back but to be honest though it's served me well and never had any major problems. decided its time to upgrade as that PC is mini and the tower/parts all need to be redone into a new machine that i can upgrade from now on.

not going for any insane machine/setup just want to be able to play every game at max and get no lag/fast loads and bootup time. which i think ill get much more from what ive seen, and upgrading to 1440p as well

my friend has built multiple PCs and worked IT and has been giving me suggestions and ive been doing a ton of research

so here's what we've come up with so far (nothing 100% or ordered yet):

Case: Corsair Carbide Series 270R CC-9011105-WW Black Steel Windowed ATX Mid Tower (i like the looks and has good ports/placing i need as well as dust covering that i desperately need, its cheap but if something MUCH better is out there im open, i just alrdy have a lot of corsair things and do enjoy the brand, just dont want/need tempered glass and mostly steel/metal is perfect instead)

Monitor:Dell Gaming S2417DG YNY1D 23.8-Inch Screen LED-Lit Monitor with G-SYNC
1440p 144hz 1ms response(basically all good besides panel, for same $300~ can get fresync w IPS but i really would prefer nvidia card which is why i need to know free/gsync vs IPS/tn panels. or to relaly just try and get both? open for monitor suggesttions as its my least sure item)

Mobo: MSI X470 M7 Gaming

PSU: Corsair FULLY modular 750w RX750m (now heres another part im not sure is overkill, alot of builds similar i see using 650w, also the difference btwn semi and fully modular? one comes with 0 preattached cables and one just has the 1? how much does this matter? and with this build will i be okay dropping to an evga/corsair 650w full modular? id prefer that anyway)

RAM: G.Skill Tridentz 16gb DDR4 (these were suggested by him but seem just fine, was looking at corsair vengeance too but i think theyre more for the asus mobo?)

GPU: Nvidia Evga GTX 1080 "FTW" (this is just kind of a placeholder, really not sure which to go with: Asus, MSI, or Evga. I've watched vids and understand the basic differences but would like to hear more opinions, also my friend keeps suggesting a vega 56 even tho 64 is more close to this card. i dont really want amd or a 1070ti as id just like decent performance out of the box im just conflicted w the CPU/monitor/freee/gsync stuff, if its BY FAR more worth it to go with a vega and freesync as it was hard to find any gsync monitor cheap. let me know for sure)

CPU: Ryzen 7 2700X (Another concern here, im saving money by not needing a cooler, but ive always had i5s/i7s pretty much whole life. im taking his word here and numbers ive seen that its a perfectly good processor, i dont need anything crazy i just would love to see 20 second boot times and no loading screens really ingame, but not sure if this is overkill. bad to mix with nvidia cards/amd parts or what. also what difference going to maybe a 2600X or a i7 8700k, besides price, would i see? is 8 cores even nessecary? lol)

SSD: SAMSUNG 970 EVO M.2 2280 250GB PCIe Gen3. X4, NVMe 1.3 64L V-NAND 3-bit
(this was reccomended by him also, i looked at it and would really love to have that fast speeds but i was also being told by another source that this SSD wouldnt be supported in this build and can only use an 860 which seems ot be MUCH slower. i have no idea? my friend swears itll work and can set it up np (he DOES work IT, so i believe him, i just want to see other opinions)

HDD: Crappy Western Digital 7200rpm 1-2tb just so i have extra space

And as you can probably see I am pretty new to all this but understand the basics, 26 years old here so don't need something for a kid with flashy stuff, but i do want a good gaming PC thatll give me longevity and not having to constantly upgrade parts, hence spending 2k.

so i can save alot of money by downgrading to ryzen 5? and going for a freesync monitor and a vega 56 i GUESS, but from a gamer's standpoint, is this worth it? should i just be going intel? i CAN technically afford it, im just trying to figure what's "best" but not overpay or get anything i wont be even utilizing. i do understand im going to be mostly maxxing every game in 1440p w this system on ultra but thats what i want and in years to come will hold up and only have to replace parts and for the first time not the entire rig

So any comments/info/criticiszm (as long as theres help lol)/whatever you'd think help, i just want to be sure this is all okay and worth it. mainly just trying to figure out the AMD/intel/nvidia stuff though. if it really is just preference and numbers i probably wont even notice, or if im going to hurt my performance by mixing, or what.

Sorry for the essay but really appreciate any info! ty!

In short, your friend is not that good due to over spending on many parts.
PSU is overkill unless you want to SLI two 1080ti, 2700X is better for productivity work and streaming, 8600k will have better FPS if GPU will not bottleneck. NVME SSD is overkill for gaming, regular ssd is fast enough for game loading as they do not impact FPS in any meaningful way.

If gaming is your only usage, I will get this:

k a bit of miscommunication but i left a lot of info out. i never mentioned the prices im getting these things for, also alot were changed out by me too but for example the SSD he recommended to upgrade bc i understand a 970 is overkill but you're suggesting a SSD ive never even heard of for $72 when i can get a 970 for ~$100, i can afford extra 30, unless its gonna bottleneck my PC by being too fast lol im good.

didnt really need a whole new build i picked these things out bc i liked them for my setting/looks too. not for $ nessecerily (case and few others at least) mainly just wanted to know if ryzen/nivida combos can "hurt" performance or anything? and if everything worked well together. i just didnt want to deal with adding extra part/cooler, main reason for ryzen tbh, i dont stream but as long as its not going to hurt gaming performance vs a 8600k i should be fine and can drop to a 2600x then. but ill wait for more opinions on that ryzen vs intel rn (27/600x vs 87/600k. the ryzen 2700x im looking at is $319 and yours is only an i5 at 240$, again not a big deal to me in price unless bottlenecking and im still under 2k like 1973$ with shipping and without any discounts applied yet due to changing parts

and yeah and i dont need SLI lmao or even a 1080ti tbh, ive seen the numbers and a 1080 is fine for me and not paying $300-400 more for only 30-40fps, at least from all the ones i saw. i can wait for black friday time if i feel i need extra fps for some reason. this is going to be a huge upgrade from 1050ti+1080p 60hz lol

but i understand, to sum it up: PSU, CPU, and SSD prices can be switched out and get an 1080ti and that adding 750w and 2700X is overkill for a gtx1080 w a 1440p setup and id be fine going to a 2600X and 650w PSU. got it. if the numbers w a 1080ti and worse processor are a BIG difference (i dont know yet) then ill def keep those parts in mind. ty

and P.S. was going to get that evga PSU anyways once someone confirmed that 750w was overkill :)

i do prefer a bit more info from ryzen vs intel owners before i do anything though (heard exact opposite from so many people)

Yeah i pretty much figured this, i had the 650w evga in my cart also was just waiting for some people to assure me :)
thanks

1080ti is kind of must have for 1440p if you want to play AAA titles. Yes, 8600k should give you better FPS than Ryzen due to better IPC single core. Extra cooler is same installation as stock cooler, what is your concern? 1440p 144hz gsync monitor is in my build too, which Ryzen will lose to 8600k in AAA titles.

For SSD, you can pick samsung, better quality but Crucial MX500 is pretty good too.

what games do you play? And what do you mean by upgrade to 1440p in the future? 1080ti will beat 1080 in 1440p in AAA titles for sure. If you think the diff means nothing to you, get 1080.

In all, not saying your build will not work well, but my build will beat yours in 1440p AAA titles :) Ryzen may not be able to reach 144 FPS but 8600k should be in many cases.

lol yea like i said a bunch, i was just recommended these parts by someone who worked IT, i dont really care AMD or Nvidia, i just wanted a good PC that isnt a downgrade from what i already have (old and cant be upgraded but still has decent specs) so yea... anyways yea your build is better budgeted for $2000 but i never said i had a limit lol, so yea not gonna buy parts from 20 random stores just to prove you're right.

honestly just gonna get something all from 1 website even if more money. i can afford it, i just wanted to make sure i wasnt getting anything that'd "hurt" my performance. much easier than dealing with stuck up nerds who influence my build based on AMD/Nvidia fanboyness and can't get real answers. Literally every time i ask someone just says how AMD is better and someone else says opposite. really all i wanted to know but i think im just going to stick to intel/nvidia as its what i know/have had anyways

thanks i guess
