Which ram would you buy?

I would buy a whole new set of 2x8gb kit at a good speed, 1600 or 1866mhz in your case, and run them in dual channel, I think the...

I would buy the dual channel kit of Ripjaws X, the 16gb blue kit. It's really good memory, and you'll be able to take advantage of dual channel memory, this allows the memory to be faster for most applications, as long as you don't need more than 16gb's of memory for something like photo/video editing and such. If your just gaming 16 should be plenty. If you will need more than 16gb's of memory get the 32gb quad channel kit.

I am going with 32GB, just 4x 8 with each link, the last kit is 32gb, or just qty 2x16 kit for 32 or 4x8 for 32. Added up they are all $300 for 32 gb, I think the motherboard will only address 30 ish but thought it only supporteed dual channel. I did not notice the last set was quad, if it makes a difference, dunno

Does the motherboard support quad channel?

Z97 does not support quad channel. Having 4 sticks in dual channel mode (still two memory banks) just means the integrated memory controller has to power all of them, so more heat inside the CPU. 2x16GB would be preferable, but I agree, quite rare to need 32GB of memory.

running with 12GB (8+4, you can thank Asus for that stupidity, from a previous MB, not MSI) and its crawling, I'm just a power user many simultaneous processes, going to 16 doesn't seem like a smart move and I dont want to mix old and new modules. And its in a open air case, temps not an issue. So wtf, go big or go home. ;-)

May I ask what your planning on doing with this system, that would give me more information into whether you'll need more than 16gb's of memory, you really only need more for video/photo editing at high resolutions like 4k and 8k, or other types of memory heavy things like Virtualization and server situations where tons of data needs to be stored and accessed really fast, something RAM is used for.
