I have a Seagate 1TB HHD than is my mass storage drive. OS is on SSD. While playing certain games the game will crash. If I close the game window fast enough I can see that all my desktop icons are gone, due the HHD disappearing, then they all come back, very quickly, and the HHD folder pops up on the screen.

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z170XP-SLI
BIOS: 22C from 2017
RAM GSkill Ripsaw 2400

Ran SeaTools long generic test: passed.
Memtest passed
Checked power and SATA cables for connection but havn't replaced them.

I experimented and pulled the power cable from device while CPU was running. The device took much longer reconnecting and repopulating desktop icons during this then it does when error occurs.

Most frequent game failure is Destiny 2. Sometimes but significantly less frequrent is Hearthstone. Also occurs during startup of Stellaris, but only start up if game loads then doesn't crash with similar error.

Thank You for any help you can give.

we can reasonably assume the drive is dropping SATA comms with mainboard altogether, which certainly explains the game crashing...; try swapping SATA ports and cables, just to rule out the simple.

If the problem persists...drive sure seems 'suspect', at best.

If under warranty, great. If not, get an SSD. Either way, I'd be backing up data sooner rather than later...
