Front USB 3.0 ports not working

I saw a lot of these posts already but I think my situation might be different. I just got through moving the guts of my old pc to a bigger case so my gpu would fit better and I could have better wire management. Everything is perfect except for the front two USB 3.0 ports not working. I’ve checked that it was plugged into the motherboard correctly. I haven’t checked for the right drivers or if it’s enabled in the bios (because they worked fine in the last case so why would they be disabled or need drivers now?) Any help would be appreciated.

Can you provide us a picture on https://imgur.com/ (or whichever service you prefer) that shows the USB 3 header cable connected to your motherboard?

As for the BIOS, you would only need to re-enable USB 3 if you lost all your custom settings during the migration of the MB from one case to another. For example, if the battery was old and left without power, it could have cleared the CMOS configuration. However, you would have known then upon boot. It's usually a pretty obvious event when it occurs.

I can get you a photo tomorrow. When I first booted the pc the only thing that the bios said was that there was a rear chassis fan missing but that wasn’t true considering I plugged the one in the new case in the same spot as the old one. It didn’t say anything else. The header for the usb 3.0 ports plugged in the mobo is a little loose in it. Not sure if that could be the problem.

Some flexing in the socket is normal when you put slight pressure on either side of the cable. Now, if it's really loose, like it's about to fall out with the slightest tug, then yes I suspect that's the source of your problem.

In either situation, go ahead and remove and then reconnect that USB cable to the motherboard.

Here’s your picture of the header. It is loose but it’s not about to fall out or anything. I did unplug it and plug it back in and it fits firmly in the socket on the mobo. It still doesn’t work. It just moves around like you said. I have a feeling this might be driver related. How do I check to see if my drivers are up to date?

Being that the headers worked before, it's hard to imagine this as a driver issue. It's just an electrical pin out with cases. One case that had a USB3 header shouldn't function differently than any other case with a USB3 header.

So the question is, "what changed"?

Do check your BIOS settings that nothing else changed. Also, if you want, see if you can take that USB3 header cable off the old case and connect it to the MB. If it works, maybe you've got a bum cable in your new case.

I’ll check my bios settings and see if anything looks different. The old header cable on the old stock case does not come off the case so I can’t check for that. If it is a bad cable in the new case that’s terrible quality control on Corsair’s part.

EDIT: I checked my bios settings and in security>bus security it listed all USB ports as enabled. I figured out how to update my drivers for all my ports so I might try that in hopes of that fixing it just so I don’t have to figure out how to replace an entire usb 3.0 header cable. If the driver update doesn’t help, I’ll just have to get a new cable.

It's usually never obvious. But unless it's actually glued into the case at the front, it might held in place with just two screws on the back-side. Otherwise, yeah, you might have to butcher the case to get the cable and ports out for testing. I can't recommend this as it might be a perfectly good case to be used elsewhere. OTOH, if it's to be trash anyways, then butcher away :)

So after checking my bios and it being ok I got the old 3.0 header out of the old case (which was surprisingly simple) and plugged into the mobo and it works. It appears I’ve got a bad header cord in my new case (worst case scenario). Still going to try a driver update though.

I’ve already got a plan now because I see what you mean. I’m gonna take my old 3.0 plug that I already removed and put in place of the bad one in the new case. It’s actually seems really easy so I’m thankful for that. Also thank you for helping me figure this out. If you hadn’t suggested testing the old cable I wouldn’t have known to do this.
