Cleaned my CPUs heatsink, PC won't start up properly.

Hi there, I'm in need of aid!

My PCs CPUs heatsink had gathered dust and today I decided to clean it.

Here's what I did:

I turned off the power and removed all the cables.
I sat the PC on its side and unscrewed the heatsink, removed it, and unplugged the powercable.

I used an aircan to blow out the dust and was careful with the fan. I heald it with my fingers as to prevent it from spinning.

I used cotton pads with isopropanol to clean out the fanblades. I saw dust around the CPU. I cleaned it, and was careful not to touch the CPU.

Once I was satisfied, I placed everything back together (sink, power supply and all the cables).

I turned on the PC, the fan spins up but all I get is a black screen.
I tried this several times and nothing changed.

I suspected that the heatsink might not have been tightened up properly so I did that.

Now the PC boots up and I can get to the BIOS. But it doesn't get to the desktop. It just goes black and the process light turns on full.

I only have this one PC and I'm writing this on my phone for the first time.

Any help would be appreciated.

You did not mention cleaning the CPU and heatsink old thermal compound!
If you didn't clean them, then don't turn on the PC until you do.

When you remove a heatsink from a CPU, that have been attached to each other for a while, you need to clean both the CPU and heatsink and reapply thermal compound.

Hi joesa

The cleaning tools I used were a cloth (meant for screens) and the following:
Air Can

Isopropanol

I did get a some thermal paste. But I'm not sure if I applied it correctly.

I cleaned the CPU and heatsink using a cloth (again meant for screens). I did go and purchase thermal paste (Plexgear MX-880 polarfreeze nano)

I did as you recommended. But it didn't help. The PC still boots up and I can get to the BIOS, but not the desktop. Black screen and load light goes on.
Not sure if I should apply more thermal paste. Or not have used the paster-thingy on the picture.

Yes, I do see it.
I did a quick check of the cables, they're all in place. I'll do thorough check thru later on. But, could this be the OS (Windows 10 Home 64-bit) that's causing this?

It looks like is not even starting Windows. I seems to get stuck between POST and booting the OS.
Check the SATA & power cables connected to the boot disk.
Try booting from a USB and see if it works.
Was the PC running just fine before cleaning it?

I'll do a check of the SATA and power cables again later on.
I'm not sure how to boot from a USB. I don't own any OSs that boots from an USB. I just have the Windows 10 home USB installation.
The PC was running fine before the cleaning.

You could try booting from the Windows 10 home USB installation and see if you are able to go beyond the blank screen
