Hi
I got a asus dsl-n14ub1router which is connected to originbroadband adsl via telephone(1mb), which is very slow and unreliable. i am keeping this for another 4 month. i know have got community wireless broadband with its own "modem" (30mb speed)with just one Ethernet port, i am using a switch to connect other computers to the modem.
my question is can ai use the the asus dsl-n14ub1 to act like a router and also, can it connect, at the same time ,to both isps, eg combine them, bundle so to get more out of them and provide backup, if one goes down and to connect all computers together on same net work?
Thanks

If you mean to get combined 5 Meg speeds, no. If for redundancy if one of them goes down, pretty sure it's possible, but is it worth it? You'll probably have to get the wireless router to be a modem on the wireless connection and be in bridge mode. Not sure about that.

Then there's security and NAT config, with potentially double NAT happening there. Then there's setting up the routing / gateways to prefer one connection over the other, but switch between them without hitches.

Meh!...I don't fancy working that out. Not for 1 Meg of redundancy. Maybe it's easy though.

Before you try anything, suggest you consider distance from cab / exchange and look into any planned works. There's a lot of superfast projects on the table for the next 2-3 years to hit the BDUK 95% coverage targets, with USO of 2 Meg (not sure if USO includes wireless, or by definition if the USO demands 2 Meg wired).

Check out the BT wholesale speedtest, line stats and so on and form an opinion of what speeds you should be getting. You might find that a bit of fresh wiring can improve things.

Also consider alternatives to Origin. Their reviews are fairly poor, even if happy customers rarely review their broadband supplier. I am led to believe they are a Plusnet reseller, and Plusnet is owned by BT, so there's an argument for cutting out some of the hassle there. :)

ADSL gateways (that's the correct name for your DSL-N14) cannot work as stand-alone routers, as there is no WAN Ethernet interface - it is buried inside the gateway between ADSL modem and router part.

Let the guy die in peace - bring it to electronic recycler, or keep it as a backup.
