Random pings and spikes, started randomly as of a month ago and hasn't let up.

So I'm having the rather tedious issue of dealing with random spikes in nearly all activities online. I play a lot of multiplayer games, and despite having fairly good ping, my latency is off the charts with swings as low as a 10ms up to 100+. After browsing a bit, I ran a few independent ping tests to google and got this:

Pinging google.com [172.217.4.46] with 32 bytes of data:

Just bought a new router, tried 2 different ethernet cables, and I don't really know what my next steps or options are. Any help would be appreciated. For the record, this is on a pc that is connected via ethernet to a modem 5 feet from my computer.

If it's only happening at certain specific times that also happen to be during peak...
This is probably more of a problem at the ISP level rather than an issue with your home networking hardware or your computer, particularly if you're running a wired connection and have replaced the router and cables too. You're probably going to have to open up a support ticket with your ISP and maybe have them check your line and see if there are any issues with their cable or routing on their end.

Whats my option if it happens around the same time every night? Switched out the modem, and it still about 8:30 pm here, and its still randomly pinging google at a higher than normal rate every few jumps. Whats my go-to discussion point?

If it's only happening at certain specific times that also happen to be during peak hours, your ping spikes may be the result of network congestion on their end. If it is simply congestion and not a technical problem, they will probably just tell you to deal with it as they don't want to spend more on infrastructure to deal with the higher traffic. At that point, all you can do is switch ISPs, though if you live in the US with the many regional monopolies in that industry, that might not really be an option unless you want to move.

I appreciate it the responses. My options are Charter and Frontier, so I'm on the lesser of 2 evils at the moment. Like I said, it works great most of the time, and the ping itself is great, usually sub-30 in League and lower in other games. The dramatic spikes are whats dicing me out. So going from 30 to 100 and back to 30 every 10 seconds just puts me off from wanting to even use the internet.
