So a while ago I sold my computer to my dad. The specs are as follows:

Case: Corsair crystal glass 460x
Mobo: ASUS Prime Z370-A LGA 1151 (300 Series) Intel Z370 HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 ATX Intel Motherboard
CPU: intel i7 7700k
GPU: GeForce gtx 1070 msi
PSU: 1000 watts gold edition (idk brand) prob EVGA
RAM: crucial sport ddr4? 8 gb x2 (pretty bad I know)
If I’m missing something let me know. The fans don’t matter to me. I can get new ones.

So the problem is that I want to build a new one and can’t have my dad figuring out. I also would like to take some of the parts from the pc I sold to him. He doesn’t use it anyway as it sits in the corner. But I would like to make it look similar.

So in conclusion, I would like to build a new pc using the CPU, mobo, gpu, and power supply. Someone help me figure out what I should buy to replace the stuff that I want to trade for my dads pc.

REMINDER: it sits in the corner and is not used. Infuriating I know

So you want to build a new, crappier PC, and swap it with the one you sold your dad that used to be yours?
And hope he doesn't find out?

Good luck with that.

What is infuriating is that you want to steal parts from a PC you sold to your dad. You really need to evaluate your priorities before embarking on this misadventure.

Talk about unethical. You sold it to him. He is your dad. Why not ask for borrowing it sometime, or is there another reason you "sold" it to him (distracted by the PC; affecting performance in school/work).

Are you saying you want to take the CPU, mobo, gpu and PSU from your dads PC? And get everything else from outside? What is the budget?

Your problems as I see it, other than ethics are:
Swapping Motherboard, GPU and probably CPU will invalidate your windows install.

No guarantee that your old system will boot/run correctly on the new hardware.

You need to know what the PC will be used for? If there are no games them you can get a 1050Ti Graphics card, an i5 plus a cheaper motherboard. The power supply you can drop down to a 500W.

Is the money saved going to be worth it.

I think the lowest impact will be in order:
1) swap power
2) swap graphics
3) swap cpu

Swapping motherboard will be more trouble than its worth.

I would come clean and tell your father that you will build him a new machine that suits his needs, otherwise it may have problems when he eventually does power up.

You definitely hit the nail on the head here. Why would Dad buy a computer off his son and never use it? Confiscated it sounds more likely.
