Trying to pick a new motherboard

I had a discussion with a bunch of you on here a few months ago after I had upgraded to a new motherboard. I say new but what I mean is, "Free". A friend gave me an old first generation i7 motherboard, the Rampage II Extreme.

I went from a 4th generation i5 motherboard to a 1st generation i7. With my lack of computer knowledge I just figured, "i7 has to be better than i5, right". I could just put my old ASRock H87 pro 4 back in and go back to an i5 but I actually have the money at the moment for a new motherboard so I thought I would ask what is a good modern equivalent to the Rampage II Extreme?

I'm not necessarily looking for the ultimate Motherboard but just something that would still support my i7 CPU and yet be modern enough that it is actually possible to get Windows 10 64 bit drivers for it, something that is sadly no longer possible for my current motherboard. From my understanding the Rampage II Extreme was a good motherboard at the time for people who wanted to overclock their machine, something that I am NOT looking to do.

I wasn't available on the original post but are trying to get a motherboard that will support a 9-year old i7, but at the same time is "modern enough that it is actually possible to get Windows 10"?

You are not going to find a board that supports that cpu that also "fully" supports Win10. You might get it to boot, but you'll have a hard time finding drivers etc...if not impossible.

Look into the current generation i3/i5 cpus and motherboards. You can get a very decent non-overclocking motherboard + cpu combo for less than $250 (stay away from "Z" branded motherboards and "K" branded chips...those are specifically for overclocking and will be more expensive).

I really hope you are going back to the 4th gen i5 and leave the 1st gen CPU nonsense behind. Since, There is no way a 1st gen i7 9-year old can outperform even the lowest 4th gen i5 desktop CPU.

Which i5 do you have?
if you needed better performance than the 4th gen i5, then a better course of action is to move forward and upgrading to a 4th gen i7.
