Diagnosing GPU crashes

Hello All,
I have recently realized that my all of my games crash and I believe the reason is due to a leak. For example BF4 I have on medium graphic settings and the GPU goes up to 99% and the memory to 40-50%. BF4 then crashes with no crash crash notification just cant do anything even quit without having the program in windowed mode. The same happens to Fortnite if I don't set the the 3D graphics to 50% and everything else to medium. My system is running a I7-3770K, 16GB memory, Asus Maximus Gene motherboard and GTX 770 GPU. I feel like I should be able to run these games at high graphics with out a problem. here are some pictures for more explanation https://imgur.com/a/I6egUdz

Also remove any USB devices that arent needed for the game; there were a few cases last year where the driver for an xbox 360 controller was causing memory leaks and crashing a few games.

In this case, the OS was blaming the games, but the issue went away as soon as the controller was unplugged.

Followed your instructions and GPU was pinned at 98/99% and crashed when at 100%. 50% memory was being used and GPU temp was 80C and CPU was 67C

I do not have any USB connected besides keyboard and Mouse

I know you mentioned BF and Fortnite, does this happen on other games/apps? Can you complete a Firestrike benchmark? If the computer is fine with other non-graphics workloads, it MIGHT point to an issue with the card itself (770 is a few years old at least).

The temps are warmish but not hot enough to cause a crash for sure.

Did you do a full "uninstall" of the graphics drivers using a utility like DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller). Not sure if it would help, but again doing a clean uninstall will at least eliminate driver issues as the cause.

Try limiting BF4 to 50% gfx and see what happens, and if you have games that DONT crash; try maxing out the setting and see if they then crash.

I am wondering if one of the VRAM chips is going bad and causing the crash; I had this on an AMD 260x, the gfx were perfect on games that didnt need the horse-power, and it crashed on games that needed the horse power.

So today I decided I would go on my runescape account and max the graphics. This cuased the GPU t be pinned at 99% and the temps rose way to high to 90C. this is the first time the temp has gotten this time and Im starting to think there is a problem with the Graphics card. I fixed the BF4 issue sorta by limiting the FPS with gametime.maxvariblefps # but it looks like im going to have to go into the market and look for a new card.

I'm pretty sure even at max graphics, Runescape is NOT all that gpu intensive...so I would say there is more than likely an issue with the card. One thing you MIGHT try is detaching the cooler/fan shroud and replace thermal paste on GPU. The card is several years old and it may be the paste is dried up. Not sure if that would help or not, but it is something to try if you can't afford a new card right now (I would imagine the 770 has the performance of something like a 1050, don't quote me on that though...)

If the GPU were at fault, then I'd expect either graphical corruption, a BSOD, or a "Driver has failed to respond but has recovered" message. 90C is certainly on the hot side for a GPU, but they can certainly reach those temps in non-ventilated cases. This doesn't sound like a GPU problem to me.

Likewise, if it were bad RAM I'd be expecting many BSODs to be randomly popping up. A memory test couldn't hurt, but that doesn't sound like a problem either.

If it were the games themselves, I'd be expecting a ton of people with less then 16GB complaining about memory leaks, so that seems to indicate the games aren't at fault.

For now, make sure you're running the latest GPU driver, and I guess run a memory test to be safe.

90C is too high really, it might be worth taking the card out and checking the cooling fans and fins arent clogged with dust before risking everything by taking it apart to replace the thermal paste; too many people come in here and ask for help after doing that and killing their card.

It might also be worth going back and trying a much older gfx driver; both AMD and NVidea current driver ranges have caused issues with older cards, even cards that are only a couple of years old. My MSI RX470 hated all of the AMD drivers issued between last summer and Easter this year; they caused all sorts of blank screen issues.

Sorry about not responding, I was not recibing emails on responses and totally forgot about this post. Anyway I uave come to the conclusion that the GPU is faulty, if I limit FPS on my games to below 30 then everthing runs fine. And Lowering FPS is limiting the demand on the card, shame that this happened and I dont have a warrenty never overclocked it or anything.

For some reason I was expecting to see Windows ME in this thread.


Even though you're running a 770, I remember that game looked/played like crap on a 750 ti unless you set the graphics to low.
Disable anything you don't need running in the background and if you're using a 3rd party anti-virus/firewall app, check for a "game mode". Also, if you're using an app to record video... make sure it's disabled while you are gaming.

All right ill make sure to do that but it dosnt account for the other games such as GTA and BF4. Does the uploaded crash folder tell anyone anything, or does no one understand it? If it does I will look for other crash folders
