Is it worth upgrading to an i5 8400 from an i5 6402P?

I currently have an i5 6402P paired with a 1060 3gb and 8gb ddr4 ram. I mostly play a free to play online multiplayer game named Paladins on steam and I am having the main issue with that game. I am having extreme FPS drops. When in combat, the fps drops of 175 ( max locked ) to 70-80. Paladins asks for i5 750 and GTX 560 as the recommended system requirements but my CPU stays at 70% usage all the time and it doesn't matter whether I am playing the game on Low or Ultra. I barely takes around 40% of my GPU on ultra.

I have been playing some single player games lately too like Rise of the Tomb Raider and Witcher 3 and COD WW2. I have been playing these games on mostly high at 1080p but they are unable to maintain 60 fps constant. What I noticed was my i5 goes upto 100% usage and my GPU comes down to 70% and at exactly that moment my fps keeps dropping. Is this a sign of CPU bottlenecking?

I right now have some money saved which I can spend on upgrading to an i5 8400 and a H310 motherboard. Will it be worth upgrading and will I get noticeable performance improvement?

Hi,

Short answer is yes. You will get an improvement. I have seen massive improvements in most games when I upgraded from my trusty old i7 3770 to a 7700k.

The 3770 was basically the same speed as your CPU.

I would actually consider maybe going with a 8600k which is not that much more expensive if you catch a special, but you will also need to buy a fan and I know that the CoolerMaster X Dream i117 works pretty well and silent if you dont overclock. It is (in my opinion) worth the extra money even though the 8400 is great value also.

Hi Gabor,

Thanks for taking your time to answer my question. The 8400 is $ 203 while the 8600k is $ 291 here in my country which is really very costly. Also I am really not in a condition to spend on an 8500, hence if I upgrade, I can go only with a 8400. If I get better results with this, I can buy it. So according to you its a sweet upgrade right?

Yes the 8400 will still make a big difference.
