Old GPU crashes in new build. Strange crash pic within

Hi guys, I posted previously and got no replies but I feel I have more information this time.
I have just built a new PC with my modest budget, all new parts minus my GPU and HDD which I carried over from my old PC, they were working flawlessly there. The system is running relatively well until I try to play games.

The games I have tested are State of Decay 2 and Overwatch. SoD2 runs for around 30 seconds then freezes, I still hear sound but the system locks up and I get a black screen until the game ends itself. Overwatch ran for about a minute before I got a 'general error' and it crashed. I got this strange screen afterwards:

The system rarely crashes when I am not playing games but when it does, the mouse and everything else locks up and I get a black screen. To my untrained self this seems like a gpu issue, but why would it not work in my new system when it worked fine in my old one?

Thanks in advance for any help, I will be extremely grateful as I'm at my wits end

I have tried:

  • memory test
    sfc scan
    furmark (triggered a crash after closing the program)
    intel burn in cpu test - ran fine at high
    reinstalling windows x 3
    reseating the RAM and GPU
    reinstalling drivers
    checking all mobo connections

ASUS Z370 TUF-PLUS GAMING mobo
Corsair 2x8 gb RGB 3000 ram
Zotac GTX 670 4gb gpu
Intel i5 8600k cpu
Corsair h80i water cooler
Corsair 650w psu

Thank you. What causes this? Is there anything I can do besides buying a new GPU?

I have an old GPU laying around. I will test the system using it now. Luckily I have a free day today!

No, there is nothing you can do. You can take it to the manufacturer to repair it, but that's a hassle and a costly affair as their is no warranty i guess.
And, the artifacts are actually caused by failing GPU's; sometimes the GPU slots are also to blame but i dont think thats the case here as you already mentioned that the crashes also occured on old system.

New GPU it is.

Sorry you must have misread, the crashes did not occur in my old system, the card and everything else was running perfectly. Would I have a leg to stand on if I were to message ASUS about the GPU slot potentially bricking my card?

Yeah, it seems i misread it. try using the other GPU which u said is laying around and check whether such crashes occur or not. If it does crash, then its time to take the motherboard back to the store you bought it from and demand a replacement.

Tested with an old AMD card (that has no power connector incidentally), worked absolutely fine for a full match of overwatch on low settings. Reinstalled and wiped all drivers, tried with old card back in definitely seated and wired right. Crashed to a solid colour and restarted twice. It has two six pin connectors.

Could it be the PSU is bad? Is it worth me testing the card in my old system again?

Thats a very good observation, check the psu in the old system and see if things check out. But according to me, i dont think its the psu or motherboard, i definitely doubt the GPU, but i maybe wrong. And one more thing, r u good with voltmeters, multimeters,etc. If so you can check the motherboard using those, but if you r not experienced in those, then dont.

I caved and bought a 1050 which is now running fine in my rig. My boyfriend is running my old card absolutely fine back in my old rig which is strange.

Still dont know exactly what was happening, but didnt want to leave the thread unanswered as it's frustrating for those reading it looking for answers to similar problems.

My guess is that the residual cooling from the CPU fan was enough for the gpu in the old rig, I am using water cooling now. Weird one!

There may be many variables:
1) As this boards are new, there may be motherboard bios or compatibility issues with the card. Maybe a bug report and a future update would had fixed it.
2) water cooling or air cooling doesnt seem to be the problem here. Bcoz many air coolers are way better options than budget water coolers.
And many more., But my guess is that either its incompatibility or the card was bad unless the card wasnt inserted properly in the slot or loosened connections.
