No, you need to update the BIOS to 3007 at least. You can check the cpu support list from asus, you can see details. https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/Z170-A/HelpDesk_CPU/

I read somewhere that the motherboard will detect the cpu with bios 2202 but won't have full functionality. Can anyone confirm this? If that's the case then I can use the cpu to update the bios.

The MB will work with other cpu, but not with i5 7600K, if the MB has 2202 version BIOS. You need other cpu to update the BIOS to 3007 at least, then you can use the i5 7600K.

If you buy the MB from local retail store, just ask them to see you can update the BIOS for you or not. Or find the local PC shop or ask your friend for help.
