Can anyone please recommend good clear general hardware testing software (free or open source) that I can use:

- within Windows

- from boot

The recommended software that works within Windows (without requiring a restart) and from boot may be different!

It would be ideal if this software can test as many items of hardware as possible including at least the HDD, CPU, RAM and motherboard.

Thanks. I remember Passmark from the past and I did use Hiren's from boot.

Does that mean that in relation to hardware testing software within Windows there isn't necessarily a one size fits all test?

I was wondering if a quick run of Piriform's Speccy (http:// would spot any major problems?

Two weeks ago I was testing a Macrium backup and got errors. Only did I realise after chkdsk showing errors in Windows 10 that the HDD was defective.

Toshiba had their own apps that spotted major hardware issues but that was manufacturer specific.

Speccy can give you SMART data on your hard disk and temperatures.
Another good one is crystaldiskinfo.
Some bios's have a SMART test you can enable at boot time.
There isn't a one size fits all for hardware.
You have to go to the manufacturer's website for good hard disk diagnostics.
For CPU/RAM you can run prime95 and check for errors.
For RAM you can use memtest86+.
