Red: replacing / Green: Keeping

I've posted a similar post before and I want to try again. I will now in a month or two have the money to upgrade my PC =D and going the custom built route as I am going to keep certain parts. Everything is falling into place on what I want. However having trouble deciding on motherboards. The current one P55-US3L is 30.5cm x 19cm (according a site-its hard to measure in the case) and is pack with a lot for its age. A possible replacement I like is the Z370 F. Which is 30.5cm x 21.cm.The problem. The PSU sits underneath by about a cm under the P55-US3L so there is little room for the Z370. So I need some suggestions please.

(I plan to spend up to £1000 on Mobo, ram (at least 16gb), 6 to 8gb GPU, i7 Core and CPU fan/cooler (that would fit).)

EDIT: here are some pictures, one showing the tiny gap left between the mobo and the space at the outside top (no where else to put it)

This should be good...

Thanks for first reply. I updated my original post with pics as space and size are important in my search for a good modern mobo.

From the pics... http://alatest.co.uk/reviews/case-reviews/casecom-km-6988-black-mid-tower-case-with-full-black-interior-exterior-120mm-red-led-front-fan-no-psu/po3-140429815,127/#overview it looks like a mid tower case which is compatible with any ATX board.
There should be enough space for the PSU after the board.

Not sure what exactly is your dilemma. :ange:

Edit: I see the point now. From the first pic, it seems like it only accomodates mATX form form factor. Slightly revised the build accordingly...

Yeah dilemma (or worry) is the tiny gap between the motherboard and the PSU. I've checked the official documents and the size of the P55-US3L 30.5cm x 19cm. There are some cables running through a holes there which really handy.

So I found a even smaller mobo with all the modern parts so is this a good set up? I chosen a i7 core. Load Wattage: 441W. I'd be ok with toning one or two bits down as long as the set up is VR ready.

Case: Casecom KM-6988 Black Mid Tower ATX Case with Full Black Interior/Exterior 120mm Red LED Front Fan (own)

Mobo: ASUS Intel 1151 Socket Z370 Chipset Strix I D4 Mini ITX Motherboard

GPU: Gigabyte Nvidia GTX 1080 GDDR5 8GB OC WF3 PCI-E

CPU: Intel 8700K 8th Gen Core i7-8700K Processor

Corsair: CMK16GX4M2B3000C15 Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4 3000 MHz C15 XMP 2.0 High Performance Desktop Memory Kit

Storage: 931GB Western Digital WDC WD10EALS-00Z8A0 ATA Device (SATA) (own)
298GB Western Digital WDC WD3200AAKS-00UU3A0 ATA Device (SATA (own)

Optical Drives: HL-DT-ST BD-RE BH10LS30 ATA Device (own)

PSU: Corsair CX550M Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply (own)

(I always have 4 USB on the back in use, Keyboard, mouse, mic, and controller).

Not sure why you are going so small when your case can accomodate bigger form factors. But if you do, there are a couple of things you need to keep in mind.

mITX is the smallest form factor and things get pretty cramped up, generating a lot of heat. You need to have very good cooling solution to avoid thermal throttling. Cofflake gets pretty hot after a while anyway, specially if you OC. Beside a robust cooler you need to have very good case cooling and ambient cooling as well.

That 550w is fine for stock speeds but if you want to OC a slightly bigger PSU would give you more headroom for safe operation. Also better quality for such high-end components. PSU is the heart of the PC and it aint a good idea to cheap out on that.

A SSD can vastly improve performance with booting and loading times.

Rest of the composition looks pretty fine.

Good points. I've gotten away with needing fancy air cooling because of the space around the CPU and the GPU. I don't plan to overclock, so I am working in the boundaries of the 550 (its also the most recent purchase of the current setup). Choosing a mobo harder than I thought in 2018 every thing else is easy.

EDIT: A bit of a fool, did another measurement. and it seems I got the width and height the wrong way round as its 19 across and 30 down and. It will be easier now to find a new Mobo...
