NIC Card not reaching max speed

I have a NIC card that says it can reach up to 54mbps but when i run the speed test im only getting 17-20mbps and my internet is around 300mbps download and upload. my phone reaches its max limit of 50mbps no problem.

Buy a more modern card ? It should run as fast as the phone does

You will not likely get anywhere near 300mbps using anything other than ethernet unless you are sitting very close to the router with the wireless...and then you could run ethernet instead.

Not sure what you are running that claims 54mbps...that is a rather old device. Most newer ones claim 300 or 900 or whatever magic marketing number they like.

Most times you see rates on wifi are related to the way the data is encoded. It is some theoretical number that you can not actually use. It neglects important facts like data is both transmitted and received. There are many other things that slow this down. The so called 300mbps devices only get in the 50mpbs range in most houses. Even the very fastest 802.11ac devices using 4 antenna/feeds only get in the 200mbps range.

Of course if you do what the manufacture do and connect the pc via a cable to the antenna ports and then modify the protocols to only send you can get massively higher numbers.....but it is much easier to use ethernet cables in that case and you could get 1gbit up and 1gbit down for total of 2gbit and it works with no special software.

with any nic port or card the max speed is the speed from bench or inhouse testing. do to windows and other issue in real life you get close to the max speed on any card. you do have an old 2.4g card. the new ones are n speed cards. what you want to do is look at the router you have. is it isp rented unit or one you own. if it isp rented one is it the newest ones they have with both 2.4 and 5g radios in it. if not see if you can get a free upgrade. 5g radios are faster then 2.4g but have shorter range. if you own the router and it a few years old it may be time to replace both the router and card with newer faster cards that do 5g speed if your into gaming or streaming for there speed. with newer router and cards you can bond both radios for max speed.

Why would you think they would only exaggerate by 4mbps. The 54mbps is a massive lie. They do things like add transmit and receive together. This would be like calling a gbit Ethernet cable 2gbit.....except Ethernet can really transmit 1gbit and receive 1gbit at the same time. Wireless can not so you speed is a least cut in half. Then is assume no interference at all. I forget what 54mbit connections tested out at. Your 17-20mbps is pretty good I suspect.

The lies have gotten even more massive as they inventented the newer cards. The router that have numbers like 3100 etc are massive deceptions. These are lucky to run connections to end devices at 250mbps. You are kinda lucky you get about 1/3 the rate they claim the newer stuff is lucky to get 10%.....the new routers have multiple radios and a single pc can not use more than 1.
