I am wondering if it is necessary for me to upgrade my psu to a higher wattage for the sake of futureproofing other component upgrades, for example upgrading to a gtx 1080ti or a ryzen 7 chip, more ram, etc.

current specs:
ryzen 5 1600
zotac gtx 1070ti
msi b350 tomahawk mobo
evga 550w psu bronze
16 gb ballistix sport ram
adata su700 ssd
wd blue 1 TB HDD 7.2k rpm
cooler master lite 5 rgb case
noctua nhu12s cpu cooler

Solution
550w is plenty. Your system will be using 250_300w. Newer components will be transitionimg to 7nm so they wont have a large power increase, more likely even lower power draw. Even the 1080ti will be happy with 550.
The quality of the psu would likely be more of an issue in future than wattage.

Is this an EVGA B3? That's the only EVGA Bronze-rated 550W that I can think of. If this is the case, you should be OK since you're nowhere near 550W. But be warned that in all three EVGA B3s tested, Aris here at Tom's had the Over Power Protection fail, so there's a real safety concern if you push the PSU too far. Whether that's a problem for you is up to you.
