Would an i7-8700k at least power on a z170 motherboard?

Hi,

So I just got the i7-8700k and installed it in my Asus K6+ z170 motherboard. At the time I didn't know about that incompatibility, and the computer was not powering on at all, no lights or anything. After researching, I found out I need a z370 motherboard. My question is though, even though it's incompatible should have the pc at least powered on and tried BIOS since it was the same socket? I just want to make sure there isn't something defective with the cpu before I buy a new motherboard.

I understand they got the i3-8100 and i5-8400 working on Z270 boards, but that is quite the adventure in editing microcode. And it doesn't change the new pin layout, so the CPU is running with less power pins then designed. They stated that K series chips would be un-wise to use on older boards. I don't believe anyone managed to work on the 100 series boards.

Either way, that just leaves you about $120 from a working system.
