Can a bad CPU kill motherboard?

A PC I put together recently died due to a cheap PSU that killed the rest of the PC. I have already RMA'd my motherboard however I'm not sure if my CPU is fine or not, is it ok for me to wait until my new motherboard arrives and try it out or is it possible that if my CPU is bad, it may kill my new motherboard?

Solution
faulty CPU won't damage motherboard.

Quite safe - - - go ahead and test your new board with existing CPU - - there's no other way to find out what still works anyway.

Hopefully this time you've got a decent PSU to hook up to it, otherwise you'll be back where you started.
