Hey guys i was wondering what should my cpu temps be if im running a i7 8700k with h115i

im running at about 34-36 degrees idle, but ive read people running in the 20s? and my buddy also runs in the 20s idle

It's going to depend on your ambient (room) temps. 20C is 68F. To hit 20C as your idle temp, your room will HAVE to be colder than 68F. Not many people cool that low. 29C is 84F. I'm not sure what the delta over room temp is for the h115i and the 8700K. If it's 10C, and your room is ~25C, or 77F, then all looks normal to me. You want it colder? You need to do either phase change cooking or make the room colder.

From what I have read, between 35°C and 110°C temperatures are rather accurate, but below those their accuracy decreases and are especially sensitive to ambient temperatures. Specifically, diurnal temperatures.

Yep thats about right. In the morning here in the UK my 8700K idles at 23 to 25 degrees C and then warms up as the outside temps rise and it is Summer...yes we do get some Sun here in England and we tend to go crazy!!! In the winter, my CPU will be in the low 20's...

beasmodeee,

Here's the operating range for Core temperature:

Core temperatures above 85°C are not recommended.

Core temperatures below 80°C are preferred.

Core temperatures increase and decrease with Ambient temperature.

Standard or "normal" Ambient (room) temperature is 22°C or 72°F. Idle temperatures below 25°C are generally due to Ambient temperatures below 22°C.

Achieving the lowest possible idle temperatures involves several variables. Since ambient temperature has been covered, it's still difficult to compare apples to apples without knowing:

(1) Is "idle" really idle ... less than 3% CPU Utilization under the Performance Tab in Task Manager?
(2) Are all the power saving features enabled in BIOS such as SpeedStep?
(3) Are Windows Power Options properly configured?

All "C" States in BIOS must be enabled to achieve the lowest possible idle temperatures. Also, if Windows Power Options for "Balanced" or "Power saver" is not set correctly, then SpeedStep will not work ... OR ... if Windows Power Options is set to "High performance", then SpeedStep will not work because Minimum processor state can‘t be set.

To check this, go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan setting > Change advanced power settings > Processor power management > Minimum processor state. The default setting is 5%. If it's not, then correct it and click Apply.

Your rig needs to be at dead idle; no programs running, and off line. No Folding or SETI or "tray-trash" running in the background, and just 1 or 2% CPU Utilization under the "Performance" tab in Windows Task Manager, where unnecessary Tray items, Startups, Processes and Services that contribute to higher idle temperatures can be disabled.

Use Core Temp - http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp - to check that Power is only about 2 Watts:

Under these conditions, your i7 8700K should certainly idle less than 10°C above Ambient. However, as the Digital Thermal Sensors tend to be more accurate at higher Core temperatures due to calibration issues such as linearity, slope and range, idle temperatures may not be entirely accurate.

My personal rig is a delidded 8700K with an H105 in push-pull, which is front-mounted. The pump idles at 75% with fans at 40% and all power saving features enabled through C7. The processor idles at 1% in Task Manager, which yields an average Core temperature of 3°C above ambient.

Better cooling and lower idle Power yields lower idle temperatures.

Thanks for this...very useful to know..

Right now where I live it is 15 Degrees C outside and around 20 degrees C inside the room and my 8700K is idleing at 29 to 30 degrees C at around 1 to 4% CPU utilisation...In the early morning when the temp is cooler outside, and inside is cooler, my 8700K is at 25/26 degrees at idle..

alright another question, so i since i have the corsair aio i got their water cooling software which shows my temps for my cpu but i also got their corsair LINKS software and the links software shoes all 6 cores and it shows it hotter than what my aio cooler says it is, which one is the correct one?

Since the Core temperature sensors, which are called Digital Thermal Sensors (DTS), are located at the heat sources near the transistor "Junctions" deep within the Cores where temperatures are highest, "Core" temperatures are always the most critical processor temperatures to monitor.

"Package" temperature, which is sometimes called "CPU" temperature, is the hottest "Core".

"Coolant" or "Liquid" temperature is of much less concern, as it's unnecessary to monitor.

A simple but accurate monitoring utility is Core Temp - http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp

An advanced, very detailed and accurate monitoring utility is HWInfo64 - https://www.hwinfo.com/download.php

8700K at idle 1%, 0.7 Vcore, 800 MHz, Average Core temperature 25°C or 3°C over Ambient, which is 22°C:
