7700k Delid Higher Temps with Paste (MX-4)

So I just did my first Delid on my 7700k after owning it for about a year. I tried thermal paste as temp trail before my Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0039RY3MM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1) arrives within a week, just to practice. I've already tried the first time and max temps was 74c. I did the delid again because I added a little too much paste on the die and got similar result: 74c. I used MX-4 on the die and have higher temps than before. It used to run 60c with an H100iv2.

Is Mx-4 not good on the die because of its lower watery viscosity compared to the thicker oem paste used on the die? Any information would be cool. Thanks again!!

Although MX-4 performs very well between the Cooler and IHS, it doesn't perform well at all between the Die and the IHS.

Delidding requires that you use only liquid metal TIM between the Die and IHS. Typical silicon TIM will fail in a relatively brief period of time. A process known as “pump-out” will cause silicon TIM to ooze out from between the Die and IHS due to thermal cycling.

Here’s a short list in order of thermal conductivity:

Indium - 81.8 W/mk (Used in earlier processors with soldered IHS)

Liquid Metal TIM (IHS to Die)

Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut - 73.0 W/mk
CoolLaboratory Liquid Ultra - 38.4 W/mk
CoolLaboratory Liquid Pro - 32.6 W/mk

Typical Silicon TIM (IHS to Cooler)

Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut - 12.5 W/mk
Arctic Silver 5 - 9.0 W/mk
Arctic Cooling MX4 - 8.5 W/mk

Any of the liquid metal TIMs perform extremely well for delidding.

Since you'll be receiving Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra, you'll be in good shape.
