Says it's overheating

I recently took the heat sink and CPU off the P5WD2-e premium motherboard as I awaiting a 64bit CPU to arrive.
But I wanted to double check the bios version, so I placed the CPU on the motherboard and started it without the heatsink as I thought I would only check the bios version and shut down. It turned on and the off.
So I placed the heat sink on top (I haven't reapplied any gel to the country and heatsink , just what was already on it).
It loaded up the bios and I got the version number, but then when it went to boot up it said the CPU was overheating. I reset the mothbiard to default settings, and still says the CPU is overheating when it's just turned on. Any ideas why this is happening?http://http://

Never run a computer with a cpu that does not have a heatsink with heat sink paste, it is the material that permits the heat to transfer from the cpu to the heatsink, and this happens in few seconds. Especially when it comes to Pentiums, Pentiums 4 or Pentium 4 Extreme. they run hot! (115W TDP) Also it could be giving you this error if you dont have the CPU fan connected on the motherboard, the cpu will shut the computer when it reaches the maximum, press DEL when you boot and see what bios says.

I was sure that the motherboard goes through the bootstrap checking to make sure everything is in working order first before accessing the CPU
I know some Pentium 4's are 32bit. I don't know why I thought my Pentium Dual was 32 bit.
O haven't used this computer for 5 years and so was trying to do some minor upgrades in RAM and realised I was running 32bit Windows.
Purely stupid mistake on my part. I'm hoping no damage has been done, but if so, only to the CPU and not the motherboard. I have a 945 lga775 arriving this week (speed improvement).
Thanks for pointing this out.

It did boot up windows and appears to be working but I haven't started it again.

Thank you. It seems clear to me now.

Do you think the motherboard would have been damaged or just the CPU?
