Temperature GPU increasing without GPU-load

Hello,

After I noticed a plof-sound in the computer-case (for the second time, I noticed the plof-sound for the first time a couple of days earlier but with no other observations) the noise of the GPU-fan increased. Now I checked the temperature of the GPU, and it seems the increase of the noise of the fan is linear with the increase of temperature measured in the GPU. Having checked the hardware from close the GPU, Motherboard and PSU (only from outside) does not show any damages of e.g. capacitors.

Simply by moving the mouse or by moving a window of e.g. a terminal session on the screen, the temperature in the GPU can increase up to and over 100 degrees Celcius (and with this the noise of the GPU-fan). This is not normal.

I am puzzled what could be the cause. Most logical is the PSU I think, but can a PSU that have some damages of e.g. capacitors cause this behavior in the GPU, while CPU, motherboard and memory do not show abnormalities (e.g. do not show high temperatures)?

Hardware:
Motherboard : MSI Z87 GD65
CPU : Intel I7-4770
PSU : Corsair CX750M
GPU : AMD FirePro V4900
Cooling CPU : Corsair H100

Thanks for thinking along.

Antoon,

At the same time there is obviously something else wrong your psu is still working and powering your PC. Either your gpu cooler has failed or your PC is so choked up with dust or obstructions that there is a lack of cool air available for it to be able to cool itself. I'd open up the pc after unplugging it from the wall. Then plug back in and power on to see if all case and gpu fans are working. Take note of any anomalies. Make sure all case fans are plugged in and working as well as Gpu. You will likely see where the issue is when opening up that case

Indeed, that is the weird thing (PSU, CPU, motherboard and even GPU seems to function as usual, except the temperature measured in the GPU is high, and the GPU-fan rather noisy). I had opened the case and removed the dust inside the case and in front of the fan in- and outlets (including PSU) yesterday already, but after this cleanup still high temperatures are measured in the GPU. I have ordered a new PSU, so lets see if with that the abnormal behavior is resolved.

I think I am using this GPU for four years now. I purchased it as it supports 10 bits color-depth, which is useful for foto-editing purposes. The characteristics of this GPU are probable not very good for gaming indeed.
