I know the choice is obvious, but still need your opinion.
With these new games coming out it's time to upgrade my old i3 3220. My GPU is 1050Ti and don't plan to upgrade it anytime soon. I know that if I get the new i5 or the Ryzen I have to upgrade my ram, motherboard and my crappy PSU because it's not that worth it.

I have 8 gigs of DDR3 ram, and I can get the i5 3470 for about 70$ ( converted from the currency in my country), so my question is should I go for the i5 3470 or is it worth it to spend some extra for the new cpu's, keep in mind that I'm a student and tight on the budget, but if it's worth it for the newer cpu's I can work and spend some extra money. Thanks!

The i5 3470 will work but you are not going to gain that much over the i3 3220. If possible, rather save up more $$$ and get a new CPU/MB and RAM. i5 8400 or R5 2600 are both good options. Pure gaming the i5 will be slightly better but on the long run the R5 2600 will be a better future proff choice as it is hyper threaded where as i5 is not . Just my 2cents worth.

for same price you will get strongest i7 from 3'rd gen. Not sure how much gain is this though.
I would say Ryzen is where you can get most performance for the price, Still its not cheap operation.
i5 vs i3 will not be much better. Try out used parts, i7 from 3'rd gen will be way lower than 70$.

exactly. this!

Agreed with all of the above but for Gaming as the Prime Focus then as others have said try to save and go for the i5-8400..my first choice or the 2600 second choice...purely becouse the 8400 is the better gaming CPU...You will be looking at a minimum of $350 to $370 for 8400, motherboard and 2x4 GB RAM.. and roughly the same on the Ryzen side

Best you can do on 3rd Gen is the i7-3770K. Base clock of 3.5GHz, turbo 3.9GHz. That's plenty to match up with a 1050ti and a considerable performance increase in many games over the dual core i3. You really won't see much of any real difference with either the 2600 or the 8400 as the 60Hz monitor you probably have and the 1050ti won't demand the difference.

I'm using a i7-3770k and gtx970, about the same as a gtx1060 and no game I play, that includes heavily modded skyrim, drives the cpu over 55% usage and the only time the gpu sees over 65% is if I enable 4k DSR.

Get the i7, enjoy your games, save your money for when you need to get a new platform and replace the entire pc.

the i7 3770 is overpriced in my country, almost the same as the i5 8400 and the ryzen 5 2600. I think I will be better off with a newer cpu, I'm thinking Ryzen because it's more future proof and in most games the cpu usage is pretty low. Like the guy above me said, I won't see a much difference between the i5 and the ryzen. Thank you all for your answers!

My 3770k cost $50 on ebay. Yes, it's massively overpriced new, as the supply is limited, it's not made anymore, and demand is somewhat high, especially in indo-asian markets where lga1155 is still popular. A used 3770k or even upto a used Xeon 1270v2 will give threads enough to handle anything that the gpu can. It's a bandaid until it's time to replace everything, something which only you can decide when that is. If that time is now, then the 2600/8400 are great deals, but I'd not shortchange your build just to squeek it inside a budget if maybe the time isn't right.
