Hello all. So as of a few days ago I started getting a BSOD, and identified (using bluescreenview) SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION ntoskrnl.exe were causing it. The odd thing is the BSOD occurs rather infrequently, and for long stretches of time I am able to use the system normally without issue.

The first BSOD happened a few days ago when my system was idling. I looked into it, updated my graphics drivers to the latest version and tested my RAM with the Windows memory diagnostic tool. No errors were found, which didn’t surprise me since the RAM I am using is only a month old. I also ran a full virus scan for good measure using Avast. All of my other drivers have the most up to date versions available (and I’ve been using them without issue for roughly 4 years now.

After that I had no issues for a day. I played games, browsed the web, watched videos, everything, and no crash. But then yesterday in the middle of a youtube video I bluescreen. So I log back in check blusscreenview and sure enough same error SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION ntoskrnl.exe.

While this was happening I started to get frequent crashes with Chrome. The Aw Snap error was popping up more and more, and my extensions were crashing. At first this was fixed by simply reloading the webpage. I updated Chrome to the latest version and at one point it crashed so hard the only way I could get it working again was to reboot the system.

The only thing that I had done differently prior to these problem cropping up was download some mods for Skyrim. Unfortunately, one of them was poisoned. I had inadvertently picked up and installed a piece of adware. Malwarebytes didn’t catch it and was unable to detect it. So I turned to the internet and was suggested I try Zemana antimalware. Zemana detected the adware quarantine it, and after looking at the file I deleted it. Problem solved right? No, even though the adware was gone I still got the two BSOD events.

I followed a guide on using the verifier tool to check drivers but every time I go to reboot after configuring it the system just stalls on the windows splash screen. I waited around for an hour to see if it would eventually do something yet nothing happened. I restarted the machine and had to use a system restore to get things working again. I did this twice. Both times stalling out on the Windows splash screen, both times having to use a restore point.

So frustrated, I uninstalled chrome completely dumped Avast and am currently using BitDefender Pro. I also uninstalled zemana antimalware just in case it was somehow responsible.

At this point I’m just waiting to see what happens next.

System Specs:
OS: Win 7 Home OEM (fully up to date)
CPU: Intel i7 3770K o.c 4.2Ghz @ 1.2v (Stress tests indicate this oc is stable and I’ve been running it for about a month now without issue and without exceeding 67 degrees C)
RAM: G Skill RipjaswX 2x8GB DDR3 2400Mhz (timings set as instructed by manufacturer to 11-13-13-31 @1.65v)
Motherboard: Asus Maximus V Gen (with latest bios update installed)
Video card: Asus Dual Nvidia GTX 1060 (3GB) [latest drivers are installed]
SSD Boot Drive: Kingston SSDnow UV400 (software indicates drive is healthy and has the latest firmware)
HDD: Western Digital Black 1TB (hardly ever use this drive these days it's virtually empty)

I also ran error checking on both drives and had no issues.

Big thanks to anyone who can help.

Ok I've got an update, just encountered a new BSOD this time regarding NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM and Ntfs.sys.

Also Bluescreenview highlighted address in stack dxgmms1.sys+e755, Ntfs.sys+a400f, and ntoskrnl.exe+93668.

Update: Ran Memtest86 and quickly detected multiple errors in memory. Am currently waiting on an Rma response from G.Skill, both sticks of RAM had multiple errors detected. I've got some spare Kingston memory I tested last night, it's error free, so I'll be installing it today and seeing if that fixes the problem.

Update: It appears it was bad memory all along. Been monitoring events for errors since swapping the memory out with my old set and havn't seen a single error. Also both of my drives are healthy and without errors. Just goes to show, don't trust Windows Memory Diagnostic tool, use Memtest86.

Thank you for the response. I haven't added any hardware such as USB drives or adapters, so I'd rule that one out. If this problem persists I'll try uninstalling graphics drivers in safe mode with DDU and reinstalling latest drivers. If that still does nothing I'll follow your advice and do a fresh install. I'll update this post with any relevant information when it comes. Thanks again.

I've ditched the bad ram and checked my old set for errors, it's clean so I went ahead and installed it and am running chkdsk now.
Will update further if problems persist.
