PC shutting off and wont turn on for a few minutes

Lately I've been having an issue where my pc will turn off during games, this happens rarely but often enough to be annoying (once a day or every second day). It just suddenly shuts off with no warning and the power button will do nothing for several minutes or if I unplug the PSU and plug it back in then it will work. I've tried three different PSU's 450w, 500w, and my current 600w, the problem happens on all three but was most frequent on the 500w. I also removed the CPU and cooler and reinstalled them with fresh thermal paste this didn't help. I've monitored my temps and all are in a good range. My current specs are:

Fx 8320 (running at stock)

m5a97 r2.0

16gb ddr3

Crucial MX500 ssd

Rx 470 4gb


I'm planning on upgrading my PC this week to a ryzen 1300x which would mean a new motherboard and ram as well, but now I'm concerned this problem could continue even after doing that. Could my case be causing a short or could this be an issue with my ssd?

Just wanted to add this https://youtu.be/pWk4qfYlKH8?t=5m51s that is the EXACT thing that is happening to me, at the end he replaces the PSU and its fine.. but he doesn't really test it for any length of time. I've tried 3 different psu's and the problem continues.

Disregard my above answer, I just re-read your question. You have applied new thermal paste and have monitored temps which are fine.

The only other thing I can think of is a faulty motherboard. Could you try using a different motherboard with the same other components?

OP says he has tried using 3 different PSUs, but the problem persists.

Your PC may be overheating due to the demand on the components to run your game. Do you have fans pulling in cold air and pushing out hot air? Is your CPU properly cooled? Have you applied new thermal paste?

Sounds like 3 garbage PSU's to me. ;)

Needs to get a good quality PSU for sure.

Two of the psu's were brand new but definitely not high end one was an evga white 500 current one is evga bronze 600 first one was some old 450w out of an HP pavilion lol. Could it really be three bad psu that seems so unlikely. I was starting to think something was wrong with my SSD it is fairly new I got it around when this started happening. Could my case be causing a short? Like one of the fan or I/0 connectors/fan hub? I'm upgrading my cpu mb and ram this week, kind worried that I'll do that and still have this problem. I also mailed the computer across the country, maybe the mb got damaged but it seems odd for it to only happen during games and for it to not want to turn on right away.

Its a pain to trouble shoot because it happens so infrequently, I had my gpu undervolted I just reset it to factory defaults I'll see if that helps. Also the first time this happened the cpu was OC'd the cpu ratio was at 20 stock is 17.5. Not being able to start the computer right away after it shuts off is what keeps making me think its the psu, is there some safety feature with my cpu/mobo or psu that would make it unable to receive power for a time after a crash like this?

Could it be my surge protector? I got it at the dollar store for like 5 bucks.

Are they bad enough that three in a row would have the exact same failure?

Also I left a game idle for a few hours with hwmonitor running and noticed my max cpu package temp must have randomly spiked. Could that be causing this? the 28 degrees is with the game still running but at some point it must have hit 96

EDIT: I think that might just be a bug because now its showing it hit a max of 225 celsius

I replaced my motherboard and cpu a few days ago and the problem is gone, I'm not sure which of the two was the problem. I have seen similar issues with the FX chips so wouldn't surprise me if it was that.
