Intel i7 8700K Chip Won't Overclock Past 4.7GHz

Hey,

I currently have a problem whereby no matter what I configured within my BIOS, I just am NOT able to get my processor to clock past 4.7GHz. I was hoping that someone here would be able to point me in the right direction on how to go about getting this corrected as I am well and truly stumped.

I have already chatted with a few individuals over on Reddit regarding this problem, but they've been unable to provide a working solution.

Specs
Intel i7 8700K
ASRock Z370 Pro4
Corsair Vengence DDR4 RAM

So far, I've attempted:

  • Overclocking to a stupidly high number (5.4) to prove a point that it wasn't just underclocking, it was limited. Didn't work.
Adjusted Voltage a lot varying from offsets of -60 to 120 and fixed from 1.2 to 1.4.
Setting AVX from 5 to 0 (auto).
Ensured that the settings are being saved between restarts.
    Updated the BIOS
    Messed with disabling EIST/SpeedShift/Turbo Boost

I run Ubuntu 16.04, but the BIOS itself doesn't show it going any higher either.

4.7 Cap

The screenshot above shows the older version of bios, but it is the same even after updating. I'm aware that 4.7 is the turbo boost cap, so could it have something to do with that? Whenever I attempt to disable turbo boost, I can't set a multiplier. When I set a multiplier it just re-enables turbo boost. Video Of It Resetting

Does anyone here have any possible idea on how to fix this?

Unfortunately, as mentioned in my initial post. I already have. I also mentioned at the end that the image showed the older version but that it hadn't changed after the update.

What link are you not able to view?

There are quite a few people online that are able to go past 4.7, and I know for a fact that it isn't a specific chip due to the fact that I have tested on 3 systems and they all have the same problem which leads to me thinking that it is just me not being able to configure it correctly.

Hi,

Theoretically, the max this chip can do normally is 5 to 5.1 GHZ. And this in rarer occasions. (silicon lottery)
Second, all cpu 's are not created equal, 4.7 might be the best you can get out of it
third, you motherboard, memory could be not that good for overclocked.

Very true, but I'm currently testing 3 different i7 8700Ks that are having the problem. The BIOS shows it as attempting to be higher, but it seems to be locked. The motherboard and RAM should be able to, as there are videos online of people using the same setup with the MB & bios.

If you have tested 3 CPUs on that system and they all fail, it would either point to RAM or mobo incapability. It could even be a combination of these. Just keep in mind that not all 8700k succeed in overclocking, so don't push it.

You can have 10 different CPUs on 10 different systems that are all wrong. If you don't have a proper PSU that supplies the motherboard enough power to allow overclocking, it won't work. Or the motherboards are all sub-par.

My CPU couldn't overclock without crashing, above 4 Ghz. With my new PSU and extra sockets on the cable for the motherboard, I can get it to 4.6 Ghz and that's way too much for my specific CPU. And even if you do test 10 CPUs you can just be unlucky. If you think you're not doing something properly, just get a simple youtube tutorial and try getting it to the same values. If that fails then it's the CPU/Motherboard/PSU/RAM and not you.
