To provide 250W load at 80% efficiency, you need to draw 300W from the wall. At 90% efficiency, you only need to draw 275W from the wall.

1W = ~$1/year so if you are putting a 250W average load on the PSU, PSU losses will cost you ~$50/year at 80% efficiency vs $25/year at 90% efficiency not counting heating savings in winter and air-conditioning costs in summer.

At 1000W average load, these figures increase to $200/year at 80% vs $100/year at 90%, so paying $100 extra for a Platinum/Titanium PSU will pay for itself after a year or two.
